All ISFJ characters · How MBTI works

Rey has a wall covered in scratch marks, one for every day she has waited on Jakku for a family that is never coming back. She eats her ration bread alone inside a fallen AT-AT, tries on an old rebel pilot helmet, and keeps insisting she has to get back to Jakku even after she escapes it. That wall is where her type begins.

I type her ISFJ. Introverted sensing leads, the function that holds onto the past, routines and promises. Rey’s life is ritual: scavenge, clean parts, trade for portions, mark the wall. She clings to the memory of the ship that took her family away as if it were a map. Even her Force vision in Maz’s castle is a flood of memories she does not want to look at.

Then there is her extraverted feeling. She is warm to strangers the second they need help, from freeing BB-8 from a scavenger’s net to grabbing Finn’s hand as they run. She reaches out to Kylo Ren across the galaxy because she senses someone in pain, and she means it. The same instinct is why, after stabbing him in the waves on Kef Bir, she heals the wound.

Her weaker side is extraverted intuition, which handles open possibility and the unknown. Rey hates not knowing. She asks Luke to show her where she fits, and the mirror cave on Ahch-To nearly breaks her, because when she asks to see her parents it shows her only herself, over and over. She wanted a lineage and got a reflection.

She is a 6 with a 7 wing that keeps her quick and scrappy. Sixes crave security and belonging, and they test the ground before they trust it. Rey is wary of Finn at first and loyal to the death once he passes. When she learns she is Palpatine’s granddaughter, what she dreads is belonging to the wrong family. Her answer, burying the Skywalker sabers on Tatooine and taking that name, is a Six choosing her own anchor.

The other strong case is ISFP, the scrappy mechanic who acts from the gut, and I see it in her fights. But her choices keep circling back to duty, memory and the people around her, and she builds her identity out of a found family rather than a private ideal. ISFJ.

Strengths

  • Resourceful with anything that has wires
  • Instantly kind to strangers in trouble
  • Loyal through every danger

Weak spots

  • Clings to the past and the people who left
  • Hates not knowing where she belongs
  • Trusts too fast when she senses pain
  • Takes on burdens alone
  • Afraid of her own darker side

In relationships

Rey keeps things. Old helmets, a handmade pilot doll, broken parts, people. Once you have a place in her life she will defend it with a staff and fix your ship while she is at it. Her quiet fear is that everyone will leave, so she sometimes holds on a little too hard and a little too long.

She needs people who stay. Finn proves early that he will, Leia trains her the way a mother would, and Kylo Ren, for better and worse, is the one person who understands exactly how lonely she was before any of them showed up.
