All ISFJ characters · How MBTI works

The first thing Abdul Ali does in the games is save a stranger. During Red Light, Green Light, Gi-hun stumbles, and Ali grabs him and holds him steady before the doll can catch him moving. He does not know Gi-hun. He sees someone about to die and acts, then shrugs off the thanks as if he had held a door. That reflex, help first and think later, is the whole man.

Ali is a Pakistani migrant worker in Korea. His boss has withheld his wages for months, he has a wife and a small child to support, and nobody official is coming to help him. Writers at NPR pointed out how close his situation sits to that of real migrant workers in the country, which is part of why his ending hurt audiences so much.

ISFJ fits his whole way of moving through the world. He remembers who was kind to him and repays it. He works hard without complaining, he is polite to everyone, and he trusts that people mean what they say. Most of all, he defers to Sang-woo, who is educated, confident and seems to understand the rules. For an ISFJ, a reliable person with a plan is a gift. For Ali, it becomes a trap.

Under that sits the 9, the peacekeeper who goes along to keep things calm. Ali avoids conflict so completely that he never questions the friend he has chosen. In marbles, Sang-woo talks him into swapping pouches and sends him off. Ali waits, then opens the pouch and finds pebbles. He works it out too late, and all he can do is stand there. Even his last moments carry no rage, only disbelief that someone he trusted would do this.

The case for ESFJ is easy to make: he is warm, quick to help and loyal to the group. But Ali is quiet. He does not organize people, smooth arguments or work the room. He serves, steadily and without fuss, and asks for very little in return. That inward, dutiful kindness is ISFJ, and the show uses it to show you exactly how the world treats people like him.

  • Avoids conflict until it is too late

In relationships

Ali is the friend who carries your bags without being asked and then thanks you for letting him. He gives trust first and asks questions much later, which makes him wonderful company and terribly easy to exploit.

He needs friends who will guard that trust for him. Gi-hun would have, given more time. Sae-byeok would watch his back without fuss and warn him about the smooth talkers. Geum-ja would adopt him on the first day and make sure he was never left alone with anyone like Sang-woo. With people like that around him, Ali could relax, and a relaxed Ali is a very funny man.
