Before the serum, Steve Rogers was a skinny kid from Brooklyn who got rejected by the army over and over and kept trying again in new cities. He got beaten up in alleys and refused to run. Captain America did not create that stubbornness. The serum only made it harder to ignore.
I type Steve as an ISFJ, which surprises people because ISFJ sounds gentle. It is a type built on memory, loyalty and the lessons of lived experience, and Steve is a man built out of the past. He wakes up seventy years late and keeps holding on to Peggy, Bucky and the Brooklyn he grew up in. When the helicarrier fight in The Winter Soldier comes down to him and Bucky, he drops his shield and refuses to keep fighting, because the friend he remembers matters more than the assassin in front of him.
His morality is about the humans right in front of him, from the dummy grenade he throws himself on in basic training to the elevator full of HYDRA agents he politely invites to leave before the fight starts. He distrusts a world built on what-ifs. He hates Project Insight because it targets people before they act, and he refuses the Sokovia Accords because nobody can promise who will hold the leash.
The enneagram says One with a Two wing. Ones carry a strict inner judge and a fierce need to do what is right, even alone. At Peggy’s funeral, Sharon repeats Peggy’s advice about planting yourself like a tree when the whole world tells you to move, and Steve hears it as a mission statement. The Two wing makes it personal. He breaks laws, fights Tony and gives up his shield to protect one friend.
And then, finally, he rests. After returning the stones in Endgame, he stays in the past to dance with Peggy, the reward a One almost never grants himself. He passes the shield to Sam on his way out. Many fans type Steve as ISTJ, and they have a point, since he is practical and rule-minded in his early films. Still, the rules never win. People do, every single time.
Strengths
- Holds his ground when everyone else folds
- Loyal to friends across entire decades
- Leads by going first into danger
- Calm, clear tactics in total chaos
- Never uses a title to shield himself
Weak spots
- Stubborn enough to break up a team
- Keeps secrets to protect people he loves
- Hard on himself, and others, about right and wrong
In relationships
Seventy years: that is how long Steve waits for a dance with Peggy, and he spends three films trying to bring Bucky home without ever treating either as a lost cause. He shows care by standing in front of you, often literally, with a shield.
Conflict with Steve is calm, polite and immovable. He explains his position once, then plants his feet. That works on villains and goes badly with Tony, who needs to argue it out. His best matches are steady and honest: Natasha Romanoff, who teases him into living a little, Tony Stark, the rival who sharpens him, and T'Challa, who shares his quiet sense of duty.
