Dean Forester built Rory a car. Not bought, built, from parts, by hand, over months, with his dad and Gypsy. If you want to understand Dean, start there. He shows love through effort, he expects it to be noticed, and he takes it very personally when it is not.
That is a Two with a One wing. Twos give, and they need the giving to be returned. When Dean tells Rory he loves her and she cannot say it back, he breaks up with her on the spot. Later he marries Lindsay young, out of love and a sense of duty, then lets his feelings for Rory pull him into an affair. The One wing gives him guilt and a sense of what a good man should be, which makes that affair painful for everyone.
His type is ISFJ. He values stability, tradition and the familiar. Dean moves to Stars Hollow from Chicago, bags groceries at Doose’s, and wants a simple, solid life: a wife, a house, a job with his hands. He is polite, friendly and helpful, gets along with Lorelai, sticks up for his little sister Clara, and tries hard to be the perfect boyfriend. The practical streak is real too, the part that can rebuild an engine.
Jealousy is where it goes wrong. When Jess arrives, Dean imagines every possible betrayal, and some of them come true. He breaks up with Rory at Kirk’s dance marathon, after realizing she has feelings for Jess. His growth is about accepting that he and Rory live in different worlds. After a Yale party where he feels completely out of place, he ends things for good. In the revival he shows up at Doose’s, happily married with kids, and Rory thanks him for being a great first boyfriend. That scene works because he has made peace with who he is.
But: some fans call him a 6, pointing to his worry about Rory’s other options. That is a reasonable read. Still, his core move is giving and expecting love in return, and when love is not returned, he gets hurt and hurtful. That pattern is the Two.

In relationships
Sweet, steady and convinced this one is forever: Dean is the classic first boyfriend. He loves through acts of service, from the car to walking Rory home, and he wants the kind of predictable life his parents had.
In conflict he sulks, then confronts, usually about another guy. He needs partners who return his care and reassure him often. Rory loved him first, though she outgrew the relationship. Luke shares his respect for hard work, and Sookie would never let his effort go unnoticed.
