Sally Jackson married a man because he smelled terrible. That sounds like a joke, and Percy narrates it like one for a while, but it is the most quietly heroic choice in the series. Gabe Ugliano’s stench masked her demigod son’s scent from monsters. She put up with Gabe for years to keep Percy alive.
Her life is a list of things given up. Her parents died when she was five, the uncle who raised her got sick, and she left high school to work and pay for his care. She wanted to be a writer. She met Poseidon at Montauk, turned down his offer to fix her problems with a palace under the sea, and raised Percy in a cramped city apartment, bringing home blue candy from the shop where she worked.
That is why she reads as ISFJ. Her strengths are memory, ritual and steady care: the beach cabin at Montauk, the blue food that began as an argument with Gabe and became a private joke with her son. She is also a textbook type 9. Nines keep the peace by shrinking their own wants, and for years Sally made herself small. She chose boarding schools over Camp Half-Blood for a long time so she could keep him close, hoping her home would stay calm and her kid would stay hidden.
Her arc is waking up. At the end of The Lightning Thief, Percy gives her Medusa’s head and leaves the choice to her. She uses it on Gabe, sells the resulting statue as art, and pays for writing classes with the money. Later she marries Paul Blofis, who treats her well, and during the Battle of Manhattan she shoots a giant with a gun from a police car. Awake nines can be surprisingly fierce.
The Disney+ series, with Virginia Kull, tones Gabe’s cruelty down from the book, and Gabe still ends up as a statue, though in a mid-credits scene where he opens Percy’s package with Medusa’s head himself. Some fans type Sally INFJ because she can see through the Mist and plans far ahead. Fair, but her plans are concrete and protective, built from what she knows has worked, not from hunches.
Strengths
- Endless patience
- Protective without smothering, eventually
- Kind to everyone, monsters aside
- Quietly brave
Weak spots
- Puts her own dreams last for years
- Holds on too tight
- Tolerates far too much to keep the peace
In relationships
Sally's flaw is holding on too tight. She kept Percy away from camp for years, even though Poseidon had warned her that monsters would eventually find Percy, because she was afraid of losing him to his father's world. Then she let go at exactly the right moment, and that is the mark of a great parent.
She does best with people who are gentle and honest, and Paul Blofis is both. Percy inherited her humour and her rebellious streak. Annabeth, whom she teases Percy about with obvious delight, gets her affection and steady support. Grover, the satyr who burst into her beach cabin with a warning, is the kind of anxious, loyal kid she knows how to calm down.
