Rewatch the tug of war. The old man who seems so fragile gives a team of underdogs the strategy that wins, and everyone thanks him like a kind grandfather, and Gi-hun starts looking out for him. Then rewatch the lights-out brawl. Players are killing each other in the dark, Il-nam cries out that he is scared, and the lights come back on. On a first viewing it looks like luck. On a second, it is the man who built the place changing the rules because the night stopped being fun.
Oh Il-nam created the games, and his explanation in the finale is chilling in its simplicity. Very rich people and very poor people share one thing, he tells Gi-hun on his deathbed: life is no fun for either of them. Everything he could buy had gone dull. So he built a contest out of childhood games, and when watching stopped being enough, he got in. Call it the enneagram 7 at its most rotten, a man running from boredom so hard that other people’s lives turn into entertainment.
Why ENTP? Because he experiments. He tests people the way a kid pokes an anthill, curious what happens next. Marbles is the clearest case. He seems to drift in and out of confusion, lets Gi-hun cheat him, then makes it clear he knew all along, hands over his last marble and calls Gi-hun his gganbu. Kindness, a test, or both? With an ENTP the honest answer is usually both. His dying bet makes the same point. A man lies unconscious on the street below the window, midnight is the deadline, and the wager is whether anybody will stop to help.
The case for ENFP is real. He talks warmly about childhood, about friendship, about remembering things he had long forgotten. But the warmth never reaches a moral conclusion. For Il-nam, a feeling is something to enjoy, like a good meal, never a reason to stop. The steering wheel is curiosity. Someone does help the man on the street, Il-nam loses the bet, and he dies without ever explaining whether he wanted to win it.

Weak spots
- Treats human lives as entertainment
- Bored by anything money can buy
- Hides behind a harmless image
- Tests people instead of trusting them
- Never pays for his choices
In relationships
Ever met someone who was your best friend for one evening and a mystery forever after? Il-nam calls Gi-hun his gganbu, shares everything with him in the marbles game, and somehow that moment is both the warmest and the most manipulative scene in season one.
He clicks with bold, playful people who keep him guessing, which is why Gi-hun fascinated him. Thanos has the same appetite for chaos and spectacle and would amuse him endlessly. In-ho is the 2015 winner he handed a knife and who later ran the island, the closest thing he has to an heir.
