All INTJ characters · How MBTI works

Hwang In-ho spends most of season one behind a black mask, a calm voice in a control room. Season two hands him a green tracksuit and the number 001, and he walks into the dorm as a player who calls himself Oh Young-il.

He won the games in 2015. Season three finally shows how: he used a knife from Oh Il-nam to kill other finalists as they slept, and afterward he went to work for the games. Everything since looks like an attempt to prove that what he did was the only sensible choice.

INTJ explains his patience. He sets up a long play: a friendship with Gi-hun, a partly true story about why he joined, a vote cast at exactly the right moment. After the first game his vote keeps the games running. In Mingle, Jung-bae sees him kill another player to get into a room. During the rebellion he fakes his own death, then reappears behind the mask.

His core is a 1, and that is the frightening part. Ones need the world to be correct. In-ho insists the games are fair, fairer than the world outside, and he enforces that fairness with real violence. When a doctor and a group of guards run an organ trade behind his back, he has them killed and their bodies hung up as a warning. Cheating is the crime. Death is just the rules.

His brother is the one thing he cannot control. In season one Jun-ho finds him, In-ho offers him a place, and when Jun-ho refuses, In-ho shoots him and he falls from a cliff into the sea.

Season three is a long argument with Gi-hun about whether people are worth anything. In-ho offers him a way out: kill the others while they sleep. Gi-hun refuses, gives his life for a baby, and the faith In-ho mocked turns out to be real. In-ho carries the baby off the island, leaves her and the prize money with Jun-ho, and flies to Los Angeles to hand Gi-hun’s daughter her father’s bloodied tracksuit.

ISTJ is a fair rival reading, given how much he loves procedure. But In-ho bends rules creatively when it suits his goal. He invents a whole persona and improvises an infiltration of his own game. That is an INTJ using the system as a tool.

Strengths

  • Confuses order with justice
  • Cuts off his own family
  • Manipulates people who trust him
  • Cannot admit he chose wrong

In relationships

What do you do with a man who will lie to your face for days and then hand your brother a baby? In-ho is loyal to an idea more than to people, and anyone who gets close to him ends up as part of the experiment.

He respects people who see as coldly as he does. Il-nam made him. Sang-woo plays the island the way In-ho played it in 2015. Jun-ho is the brother he could never convince, and in the end the only person he trusts with the one life he chooses to save.
