Thanos, real name Choi Su-bong, is an internet rapper with purple hair and a cross around his neck that doubles as a pill case. He lost his money on a cryptocurrency promoted by Lee Myung-gi, Player 333, and he was about to jump from a bridge over the Han River when the Recruiter handed him a card. So he arrives with a grudge, a stash, and absolutely no plan beyond the next five minutes. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said he chose the name partly to give the character worldwide appeal, and it worked.
Everything about him happens now. During Red Light, Green Light he watches a woman he was flirting with get shot, swallows a pill with shaking hands, and starts treating the field like a playground, shoving other players into the line of fire. In the pentathlon he leads a team of his own. In Mingle he picks Min-su as a teammate instead, kicks his own fan Gyeong-su out of the way, and Gyeong-su dies. ESTPs live in the present tense, and enneagram 7s run from pain toward stimulation. Thanos does both, with chemical help.
His social world is a hype crew. Nam-gyu is his best friend, bonded mostly by a shared dislike of Myung-gi. He mocks the players who vote to leave and leans on Min-su to change his vote. When that pressure turns into a brawl in the bathroom, Myung-gi stabs him in the neck with a fork, and the loudest man on the island goes very quiet. The man who mocked everyone else’s fear never saw his own end coming. For all his noise, he never once seems to ask what any of it means.
Is he an ESFP? He loves an audience, and he performs constantly. But an ESFP wants the room to feel something with them. Thanos is testing what he can get away with: how far he can push, who will flinch, what happens next. That is ESTP energy pointed in the worst possible direction. He would hate this profile, and he would still share it. Netflix viewers still voted him their favorite new character of season two.
Strengths
- Fearless in front of a crowd
- Quick reflexes
- Never, ever boring
Weak spots
- Uses drugs to cope
- Bullies anyone weaker
- Holds grudges for years
- Abandons allies when it suits him
- Mistakes chaos for courage
In relationships
Thanos treats friendship like a hype crew. Nam-gyu is his best friend because they share a target, and his fan Gyeong-su is welcome right up until he becomes inconvenient. Loyalty, for Thanos, lasts about as long as the beat.
He would get along famously with Deok-su, who enjoys intimidation just as much, and Il-nam would find him wildly entertaining to watch from a safe distance. Gi-hun would try to save him, which would confuse him enormously. Hyun-ju is the person who would put him firmly in his place, and honestly he needs that more than he needs another fan.
