Eloise Bridgerton would like to know why. Why girls must marry, why nobody discusses anything interesting at a ball, why the person writing Whistledown gets to be the only clever woman in London. Ask her a simple question and you will get three questions back. That restless questioning is the ENTP engine. Eloise treats the Whistledown mystery as the best puzzle in town. She follows the trail to a print shop, meets Theo Sharpe, the printer’s apprentice, and comes home with radical pamphlets and a head full of new ideas about workers and women. She takes ideas apart to see if they hold. She cross-examines the marriage market at dinner like a barrister, and she loves a debate even when she is losing it.
Her books, theories and pamphlets are armor against a world that wants her married and quiet. Fives guard their independence and arm themselves with knowledge, because their deepest fear is being helpless or swallowed by the demands of others, and I read her as a Five with a 4 wing. The 4 wing is her insistence on being different, and her sulky disgust when she suspects she might be ordinary after all.
The warmth hides in her loyalty. She is fiercely devoted to Penelope and to her siblings, and she uses jokes to keep family dinners from going sour. Tradition and routine are where she shuts down. The idea of a lifetime of embroidery and morning calls is her personal nightmare, and her own presentation to the Queen in season two looks like a hostage video in a lovely gown.
Her hardest lesson is about people. When she learns at the end of season two that Penelope is Whistledown, she feels betrayed and cuts her off. In season three she befriends Cressida Cowper, of all people, and discovers that even a mean girl has a story. She ends up forgiving Penelope and heads to Scotland with Francesca, curious about whatever comes next. Plenty of fans type Eloise as a Four, since she so badly wants to stand apart from other debutantes. It is a good argument. I chose Five because her first move in a crisis is to research, investigate and think, while a Four would turn inward to feel. Eloise wants answers more than she wants to be understood.
Strengths
- Asks the questions nobody else dares to
- Quick, funny and impossible to bore
- Loyal to her friends to the bitter end
Weak spots
- Argues for sport and forgets feelings
- Dismisses anything traditional too quickly
- Holds grudges against people she loves
- Judges others as shallow before she knows them
In relationships
If Eloise argues with you for three hours, she likes you. Her friendship with Penelope is the backbone of the first two seasons, and its collapse hurts her more than any failed romance could, because she trusted Penelope with her whole mind. Eloise loves through conversation.
In conflict she is loud, logical and slow to forgive, but she does come back. Her best matches can keep up: Penelope, her oldest friend and rival brain, Kate, who would debate her over breakfast, and Colin, the brother who shares her hunger for anything beyond a ballroom.
