All INFP characters · How MBTI works

Ten-year-old Nico di Angelo arrives talking nonstop about a card game called Mythomagic. He tells everyone the Manticore’s attack points. He thinks being a demigod is cool. He asks whether Annabeth is Percy’s girlfriend, loudly. A book later he is grim, solitary and calling up the dead. Few characters change this much this fast, and the change is the best argument for his type.

Nico and his sister Bianca were born in the 1920s, hidden for decades in the Lotus Hotel, and dropped into the modern world with no memory of their past. Bianca was his whole family. When she joins the Hunters, then dies at the junkyard of the gods after taking a little Hades figurine for him, the floor falls out. He blames Percy, learns he is a son of Hades, and runs.

INFP fits because everything Nico does passes through a private, fierce value system. He holds grudges like heirlooms. When he summons ghosts in The Battle of the Labyrinth, he insists on doing it with respect for the dead, even while the ghost of King Minos whispers about trading a soul to bring Bianca back. Under the gloom is a kid whose sense of right and wrong belongs entirely to him.

That inner world is classic type 4. Fours feel fundamentally different from everyone around them, and Nico is sure he will never belong at camp because of who his father is. At his lowest he says, more or less, that only the dead respect him. It is hard to find a more Four sentence in children’s fantasy.

What turns him is Bianca’s ghost, who tells him her death was not Percy’s fault. He forgives, keeps the figurine, and starts using his strange gifts for the living. In The Last Olympian he leads Percy into a trap at his father’s palace in exchange for news about his mother, then breaks him out, guides him to the Styx, and talks Hades into marching on Manhattan.

The case for INFJ grows in later books, where Nico plans further ahead. In these five books, though, he feels first and strategises second. On screen he has not arrived yet: Levi Chrisopulos is cast for season three, which adapts The Titan’s Curse and is scheduled for November 2026.

Strengths

  • Fiercely loyal once won over
  • Courage in the darkest places
  • Respects the dead and the overlooked

Weak spots

  • Holds grudges for years
  • Isolates himself when hurt
  • Easy prey for manipulators who promise answers
  • Assumes nobody wants him around
  • Keeps plans secret until it is almost too late

In relationships

What does Nico want from people? Mostly, not to be left. Bianca joined the Hunters and then died, and he spent a long time convinced that everyone else would go the same way. His fury at Percy was grief with nowhere else to go, and his forgiveness, when it came, was just as complete.

He needs patient people who do not flinch at skeletons. Percy keeps his secret about Hades and keeps showing up anyway. Once he reaches camp, Grover takes him to the orientation film and puts up with the questions. And Mr. D, of all gods, gets the full Mythomagic treatment when a ten-year-old Nico calls him the wine dude and recites his defense points. Mr. D is annoyed, though the two grow close in later books.
