All ENFP characters · How MBTI works

Grover is a satyr who chews on furniture when he is nervous, cries easily, snacks on tin cans, and once kept a cyclops from eating him by weaving a wedding veil all day and secretly unravelling it at night, the same trick Penelope used in the Odyssey. He is also, quietly, one of the bravest people in the series. It just takes him a while to notice. In the first book he is technically Percy’s protector, which annoys Percy, since he has been the one fending off bullies on his behalf.

He reads as ENFP: warm, excitable and steered by an enormous idealistic dream. Like many satyrs, he wants to become a searcher and find Pan, the lost god of the wild. His father and uncle tried and failed. Grover keeps the hope anyway, and his mind can leap from cheese enchiladas to the fate of every forest in one breath. That hopeful, idea-hopping, people-first energy is extraverted intuition with a soft heart behind it. He is a vegetarian, he hates zoos, and he is a terrible liar, which in a satyr whose job involves undercover work is a real problem.

Under the enthusiasm sits a lot of fear, and that is where type 6 comes in. He failed his first assignment, the one with Thalia, Luke and Annabeth, and nearly lost his job over it. He wants the Council of Cloven Elders to approve of him, and he is terrified of underground places and cyclopes. Sixes look for safety and for someone to trust. Grover finds it in Percy, and the empathy link between them is a six’s ideal friendship: a person you can feel from across an ocean.

The payoff comes in The Battle of the Labyrinth. He finds Pan, and Pan is dying. Instead of the triumph he wanted, Grover has to carry that news home, and the elders brand him a traitor for it. He does it anyway, scatters an invading army with a cry of panic, and ends the series with a seat on the Council of Cloven Elders. INFP is a decent alternative, since his values run so deep. I still pick ENFP because his feelings live entirely on the outside. The Disney+ series, with Aryan Simhadri, keeps the search for Pan running as a recurring thread.

Strengths

  • Endless empathy
  • Loyal far past the point of fear
  • Hopeful when everyone else has quit

Weak spots

  • Panics under pressure
  • Doubts himself constantly
  • Cannot lie to save his life
  • Craves the approval of elders who rarely give it

In relationships

Grover's empathy link with Percy began as a rescue tool and turned into the most literal friendship in the books. He feels what his friends feel, which is lovely when things are good and exhausting when they are not. With Juniper, the dryad he dates, he is sweet, devoted and slightly afraid of her temper, which is how he approaches a lot of life.

He pairs best with people who are braver out loud than he is, because he is braver inside than he looks. Percy protects him and lets himself be protected back. Tyson becomes a real friend once Grover gets past his fear of cyclopes. Sally, who drove him and Percy toward camp, has the calm he rarely finds anywhere else.
