The first thing Ned Stark does in the series is execute a deserter from the Night’s Watch, and he swings the sword himself. His rule is simple: if you sentence a man to die, you look him in the eye and do the job with your own hands. Rules only mean something to him if he carries their weight personally. He is a classic ISTJ, running on how things have always been done in the North, on vows made years ago, and on a promise to his dying sister that he keeps for the rest of his life. As Hand of the King he does what an honest administrator would do: he investigates Jon Arryn’s death, follows the trail to a dusty book of noble lineages, notices that every Baratheon in it has black hair, and works out the truth about Joffrey.
Then he hands that truth to Cersei. Ned warns her to take her children and flee before he tells Robert, because his code will not let him send kids to their deaths, even indirectly. It is the most decent decision anyone makes in King’s Landing, and it gets him killed. The flaw is that he cannot picture someone breaking a deal he would keep. He trusts Littlefinger to deliver the City Watch, and Littlefinger delivers a knife to his throat instead.
Ned is a One with a 9 wing. Ones live by an inner standard of right and wrong and feel personally responsible for upholding it. Ned resigns as Hand rather than approve the murder of a pregnant Daenerys. The 9 wing keeps him quiet and steady instead of preachy.
He does not get a growth arc so much as a breaking point. He has kept one quiet lie for years, about Jon. At the Great Sept of Baelor he tells a loud one, confessing to treason he never committed so that Sansa might live. Honor loses to fatherhood, and Joffrey takes his head anyway. Some fans call Ned an ISFJ, pointing to his warmth with his children and his loyalty to Robert. It is a fair read. I keep him ISTJ because he frames almost every decision as law and duty first. He reasons from the rule, then feels the cost, and he pays it every time.
Strengths
- Keeps his word when it costs him
- Fair and consistent with everyone
- Takes personal responsibility for hard calls
- Steady, protective father and friend
Weak spots
- Assumes others play by his rules
- Slow to adapt when the game changes
- Swallows objections until it is too late
- Treats mercy to enemies as non-negotiable
In relationships
Ned makes time for Arya's sword lessons, keeps Jon close despite Catelyn's objections, and spends his last act protecting Sansa. He rarely says much, but his family never has to wonder where they stand. He loves quietly and completely, and with Robert he is loyal past the point of good sense.
In conflict Ned is calm, direct and stubborn. He tells you plainly what he thinks is wrong and will not move. His best matches share his sense of honor and soften his rigidity: Brienne, who would understand his vows better than anyone at court, Jon, who carries his example north, and Arya, whose wildness he never tried to break.
