Ross Geller has been married three times, and he will happily explain why none of it was entirely his fault. He also lost his mind over a stolen turkey sandwich. To understand Ross, start with the sandwich.

It is the leftover sandwich Monica makes him after Thanksgiving, with an extra gravy-soaked slice of bread in the middle, and it stands for everything he trusts: routine, family, a thing he was promised. When his boss, Dr. Ledbetter, eats it, Ross rages and ends up on a sabbatical. That is classic Enneagram 6. Sixes look for security, and when the ground shifts they turn anxious, suspicious and loud. Ross builds a full theory of betrayal out of Rachel’s friendship with Mark, her coworker, and the jealousy helps wreck the relationship. His 5 wing is the professor who would rather lecture about dinosaurs than discuss his feelings.

The type is ISTJ. Ross never lets go of a detail, which is introverted sensing at work. His famous line about being on a break is less a defense than a filing system: he remembers the night, the fight, the exact words, and he is still citing them seasons later. Extraverted thinking backs it up. He corrects grammar, cites facts, and makes a pros and cons list on Chandler’s new computer to choose between Rachel and Julie. Running a love life through a spreadsheet is about as ISTJ as it gets.

Underneath the record-keeping lives the romantic. Ross has loved Rachel since high school, and his feelings are deep, private and stubborn. Give him an unknown and he imagines the most humiliating possibility, then acts on it before checking. He grows, slowly. He becomes a devoted dad to Ben and Emma, learns that Rachel is not a fossil he can catalogue, and in the finale he chases her to the airport with no list and no plan, because the feeling finally outweighs the record.

A fair counterpoint: plenty of fans type Ross as INTP, pointing to his nerdy obsessions and love of explaining things. Still, an INTP questions the rules, and Ross loves rules. He wants his sandwich, his traditions and his facts in order.

Strengths

  • Loyal to family and old friends
  • Remembers every detail you ever told him
  • A patient, devoted father

Weak spots

  • Jealous and insecure in love
  • Needs to win every argument
  • Lectures when nobody asked
  • Panics when plans change
  • Keeps score long after the fight is over

In relationships

Ask Ross about love and he will start with a speech. He loves like a romantic from an old movie: grand gestures, matching memories, a list of reasons. The catch is that he also keeps score. His relationship with Rachel swings between sweet and suffocating, and his three marriages each fall apart for a different, very Ross reason, including saying the wrong name at the altar.

In a fight he argues with dates and evidence, then sulks. His best matches are patient and secure: Rachel when she is steady, Chandler, who mocks him into calming down, and Phoebe, who keeps poking holes in his certainty and somehow stays his friend.
