All ISTJ characters · How MBTI works

Ask people about Simon Basset and they mention the spoon. Fair enough. The scene that explains him comes much earlier, though: a small boy with a stammer, practicing words alone for hours because his father would rather have no heir at all than one who could not speak properly.

That boy grew up into an ISTJ, because introverted sensing stores the past in sharp detail and lets it steer the present. Simon does not move on from his childhood. He carries it. The cold father, the years of silence, the deathbed where he promised himself the Hastings line would end with him: all of it replays every time Daphne mentions children. Most people grow out of their childhood. Simon built a house on top of his and locked the door.

Practicality comes second. He pitches the fake courtship like a business arrangement: she gets suitors, he gets the mothers of Mayfair off his back. When Anthony catches them in the garden, Simon turns up to the duel at dawn ready to be shot rather than marry a woman he believes he will disappoint. It is a terrible plan, carried out with total calm.

What he cannot do is imagine other futures. Simon cannot picture himself as a good father. That option does not exist in his head until Daphne drags it into the light. His private moral code is the loudest voice in there, and the vow is the loudest thing in it.

Ones live by an inner rule and keep their anger under a heavy lid, and Simon is a One with a 9 wing. He beat his stammer through sheer discipline, which is the inner critic at work, and his vow is a rule he enforces against his own happiness. The 9 wing makes him withdraw rather than fight. When things go wrong with Daphne, he goes distant and quiet, sleeping elsewhere instead of shouting.

Plenty of fans call him ISTP, pointing to his sparring sessions with the boxer Will Mondrich and his cool, physical detachment. It is a fair read. Still, an ISTP drops a rule the moment it stops working, and Simon clings to his for a whole season after it starts hurting everyone. The past is in charge here. That is the ISTJ.

Strengths

  • Keeps his word, sometimes to a fault
  • Calm and steady when things fall apart
  • Loyal to the few people he trusts

Weak spots

  • Lets old wounds make present choices
  • Hides the truth instead of explaining it
  • Withdraws when he should talk
  • Cannot picture a different future

In relationships

For years Simon keeps people at arm's length, which is why his friendship with Anthony and his bond with Lady Danbury matter so much: they are the few who got in. He loves carefully, then completely. With Daphne, the guard comes down in stages, and every stage costs him something.

In conflict he goes silent and stiff, and he needs a partner who will keep knocking. Daphne does exactly that. Anthony, who nearly dueled him at dawn and still calls him a friend, gets his loyalty, and Lady Danbury, who coached the boy with the stammer, will always have his ear.
