All INTJ characters · How MBTI works

For most of season one, Marilyn Thornhill is the only adult at Nevermore who seems to like Wednesday. She teaches botany, runs Ophelia Hall, brings Wednesday flowers and asks nothing in return. She is also Laurel Gates, sister of Garrett Gates, descendant of Joseph Crackstone, and the woman pulling the Hyde’s strings.

We type her as an INTJ, and the key is patience. Laurel builds a fake identity, waits years, learns the school, picks a Hyde, trains him, and sets up the ritual to bring back Crackstone. That is a plan built around one vision of the future, chased with total focus. Most villains want power right now. Laurel waited through faculty meetings, dorm inspections and greenhouse watering schedules, smiling the whole time, because the ending was the only thing that mattered.

She is also coldly efficient. She uses Tyler without guilt, she uses Wednesday’s blood to break the bloodlock, she kills Weems with a single syringe. Her emotions run underneath it all, grief for her brother most of all, but she organizes them into a mission instead of letting them show.

Her enneagram type is a 1 with a 9 wing. Ones believe the world is broken and they are the ones who must fix it. Laurel sees outcasts as a disease and her ancestor as a righteous man. In her own mind she is not a villain at all. She is a reformer finishing her family’s work. The 9 wing gives her the gentle teacher voice, the soothing calm that makes the reveal so chilling.

She does not grow, she escalates. The closest she comes to change is the final fight, when the plan collapses and she shows how furious she has been all along. Then Eugene’s bees swarm her, and a botany teacher is defeated by pollinators. The show has a sense of humor about her.

INFJ is the main alternative: the warm teacher act, the moral crusade. But an INFJ’s mission is usually about people, while Laurel’s is about a cause that treats people as tools. Her warmth is entirely strategic. INTJ fits her better.

In relationships

A kind word, a warm cup of tea, an encouraging word about your science project: that is how Laurel gets close. Every kindness has a purpose, and most of them are part of a plan you have not seen yet. She can be charming company until the moment you stop being useful.

Tyler is the person she controls most completely, which says a lot about how she loves. Morticia would be the one rival she respects, a woman with equal poise and better taste. Wednesday is the only person who ever saw through her, and Laurel hates and admires her for it in equal measure.
