All INTJ characters · How MBTI works

Oscar Martinez has a favorite word, and it starts nearly every correction he has ever made. You can feel it coming: a small breath, a polite tilt of the head, and then the fact you got wrong. Half the office finds it exhausting. The other half quietly relies on it.

Fives feel safe when they know more than the room, and they protect themselves with expertise and distance. Oscar is a 5 with a 4 wing. He does not need to be loved by the office. He needs to be right in it. The 4 wing adds the aesthete: the wine, the art opinions, the sense that he is a little more cultured than Scranton deserves.

I type him as an INTJ, and the pattern-spotter is introverted intuition. When Ryan is arrested, Oscar is the one who explains, calmly and a little smugly, that Ryan had been counting the same sales twice. Extraverted thinking wants the facts in order and the decisions grounded in them.

His pride is private. In Gay Witch Hunt, Michael outs him to the whole office, then tries to prove he is fine with it by kissing him in front of everyone. Oscar handles it with more dignity than anyone else in the room, and walks away with three months of paid vacation and a company car. He does not make speeches about his hurt. He just quietly decides who has earned his trust.

Taste is where his weakest function, extraverted sensing, lands. The Finer Things Club, with its good books, real china and strict rules about what counts as fine, is his way of keeping the physical world refined and under control.

He grows by stepping out of the observer’s chair. The affair with the senator shows him his own judgment has blind spots. He ends up living with Angela, of all people, and becoming her friend. In the finale he is running for state senate, which is a big move for a man who used to prefer correcting leaders over becoming one.

Some fans call him INTP, since he loves ideas and debate. I get it. Still, Oscar does more than play with theories. He wants the right answer applied and the plan fixed, and he gets restless until it is.

Strengths

  • Keeps calm when everyone else panics
  • Spots the flaw in any plan quickly
  • Handles cruelty with real dignity
  • A loyal friend once you earn it

Weak spots

  • Corrects people who did not ask
  • Can come across as condescending
  • Keeps his feelings locked away

In relationships

Carefully, slowly, with a few quiet tests: that is how Oscar lets people in. He is the friend who will explain your tax return, roll his eyes at your wine choice, and still show up when your life falls apart, which is exactly what he does for Angela.

In conflict he argues with facts and a raised eyebrow. His best matches are Angela, the rival who becomes family, Pam, his fellow Finer Things devotee, and Kevin, the accounting partner he defends more often than he admits.
