Jang Geum-ja signs up to clear her son’s gambling debts, then discovers that her son signed up too. Park Yong-sik is Player 007. She is Player 149, one of the oldest people in the game, and she spends the next few days trying to parent a grown man in the middle of a massacre.
ESFJ fits her down to the details. She notices who is frightened, who is being left out, and who is about to do something stupid, and she moves toward them. While other players keep their distance from Hyun-ju, Geum-ja treats her like family. She sticks with Hyun-ju and the pregnant Jun-hee through the worst of everything.
She is a 2, and the shadow side of a 2 is giving endlessly to people who only take. Yong-sik keeps voting to stay while she wants to go home. She defends him anyway, because he is her son and in her mind that settles it. She keeps looking for the good in him long after everyone else has stopped.
Hide and seek breaks her. She helps deliver Jun-hee’s baby while Hyun-ju holds off attackers, and she closes Hyun-ju’s eyes after Myung-gi kills her. Then Yong-sik, unable to kill any hider, turns on Jun-hee and her newborn. Geum-ja stabs him with her hairpin, and the guards finish it. The same instinct that brought her to the island to save her son is the one that makes her kill him.
She begs the players voting O to stop and offers to give up her own share. They ignore her. She asks Gi-hun to protect Jun-hee and the baby, and when he says no, she hangs herself. Her request outlives her. Gi-hun carries the baby across the jump rope bridge and eventually gives his life for her.
ISFJ is the obvious alternative, since her care is so practical. But Geum-ja is outward-facing in a way ISFJs rarely are. She speaks up in group debates, rallies people, works the room, and pleads with the whole dorm when a vote is coming. Her warmth is public and social, not private. That makes her an ESFJ.
Strengths
- Sees who needs care first
- Brave in a crisis
- Makes outsiders feel welcome
- Gives without keeping score
- Steady hands in an emergency
Weak spots
- Protects people who do not deserve it
- Carries guilt that is not hers
- Ignores her own needs
In relationships
Geum-ja shows love with advice, scolding and a firm grip on your arm when you are about to do something reckless. She will adopt you the day you meet, and once she has, she will not let you go without a fight.
Hyun-ju is the daughter the dorm gave her, and their bond is the warmest thing in season two. Ali has the same quiet decency she would love on sight. Gi-hun, stubborn and soft-hearted, is the person she trusted with the most important thing she had left to protect, and he kept that trust to the very end.
