All INFP characters · How MBTI works

Kylo Ren keeps his grandfather’s melted helmet in his quarters and talks to it like a confession booth. He asks it to show him the power of the darkness again, because he can feel the pull of the light. Think about how strange that is. The most feared man in the First Order is privately asking a lump of scorched metal for reassurance.

I type him INFP, the dark mirror of his uncle. Introverted feeling goes all the way down: Ben Solo judges everything by an inner standard and is tormented when he falls short of it. He smashes consoles with his lightsaber whenever things go wrong, and the target is never the failed plan. It is his own picture of himself. Extraverted intuition gives him the big symbolic gestures. He tells Rey the past should die, by force if needed, and he means Snoke, the Jedi, the Sith and his own parents in one sweep. The weak function, extraverted thinking, is why the gestures never become a plan. When he kills Snoke and takes command, he has no idea what to do with the throne besides offer half of it to Rey.

Underneath that is a textbook 4 with a 3 wing. Fours feel defective and different, and they hunt for an identity big enough to explain the pain. Ben was born to a senator and a war hero, with Skywalker blood and a famous uncle, and he still felt unseen. Kylo Ren is the identity he built to be somebody, a mask in both senses. When Luke stands over him with a lit saber for one panicked second, it confirms the story Ben already told himself, that they all feared him. The 3 wing hungers for status, hence the climb to Supreme Leader.

Could he be INFJ? Some argue it, pointing to his Force connection with Rey. I don’t buy it. He reads people poorly, especially his own mother, and he chooses from what he feels in the moment rather than where things are heading. His return in The Rise of Skywalker, after Leia reaches him and a memory of Han talks him down, is a pure Fi moment: one inner verdict flips, and everything flips with it. He throws his saber into the sea, an echo of Luke tossing his aside in the throne room.

  • Seeks approval from dangerous mentors
  • Confuses destruction with fresh starts

In relationships

Why does Kylo push away everyone who reaches for him? Because being loved means being seen, and he is not sure what they will find. He attacks first and mourns what he broke afterwards, which is how he ends up killing his father and grieving him at the same time, for the rest of his short life.

The people he needs are patient and fearless enough to hold the line. Rey is his true counterpart, the one who matches him blow for blow and still offers her hand. Leia never stops calling to him, and Han, in memory, is the voice that finally brings Ben home.
