All ENTP characters · How MBTI works

Some characters take a while to type. Tyrion takes about one scene. He is an ENTP, and he would happily argue with you about it over a third cup of wine.

The mind is the first clue: it sees angles, links and escape routes nobody else noticed. Locked in the sky cells of the Eyrie, he talks his way into a trial by combat, and Bronn steps up as champion because Tyrion has made it very clear that Lannisters pay well. At the Blackwater he sets the bay on fire with a ship full of wildfire.

The lawyer in his head checks every claim for holes. Watch him on the small council, telling Pycelle, Littlefinger and Varys three different versions of one marriage plan to find out who leaks to Cersei.

Charm and a soft spot for outcasts are the warmer half. He designs a saddle so Bran can ride again, and he tells a young Jon Snow to own his bastard name so nobody can use it against him. The body and the past are exactly the places where Tyrion hurts. He drinks to blunt both.

Sevens dodge pain by staying busy, clever and entertained, and Tyrion, a 7 with an 8 wing, treats wine, books and banter as a full-time job. The 8 wing gives him teeth. He slaps Joffrey more than once, and at his trial for Joffrey’s murder the jokes run out and the fury takes over: he tells the court he wishes he were the monster they think he is, then demands trial by combat.

His arc is a Seven learning that cleverness has limits. In Meereen he strikes a deal with the slavers that blows up in his face. His advice to Daenerys in Westeros keeps failing, and he ends the war walking through a city that burned anyway. He still gives the speech that picks the next king, which tells you the show never stopped trusting his words more than his plans.

Some readers type Tyrion as INTP, since he loves books and spends many scenes thinking out loud with only a goblet for company. Fair, and the books make him more bitter and inward. On screen, though, he comes alive in conversation, and his best ideas show up while he is bouncing off someone else.

Strengths

  • Talks his way out of nearly anything
  • Kind to outcasts and underdogs
  • Reads politics faster than anyone
  • Funny under pressure, even on trial

Weak spots

  • Drinks to avoid his own pain
  • Overestimates how well his plans will land
  • Uses jokes to dodge real feelings
  • Trusts the wrong people when lonely

In relationships

His marriage to Tysha was destroyed by his father, and his bond with Shae ends with her testifying against him. Yet Tyrion keeps loving with his whole sarcastic heart. His closest relationship, with Jaime, survives lies and a murdered father. He shows love through loyalty, protection and very long conversations.

In conflict he argues brilliantly and then regrets the best line. He needs people who can keep up and still forgive him. Sansa, his kindest and strangest match, sees his decency. Varys trades wit with him like an old friend, and Jaime remains the brother who never once treated him as less.
