In season three Varys tells Tyrion the story of how he became a eunuch. A sorcerer bought him as a boy, cut him, and burned the pieces in a fire, and a voice seemed to answer from the flames. Varys spent the next decades building a network of spies until he found that sorcerer again. At the end of the scene he opens a crate, and the sorcerer is inside it. That is Varys: patient, quiet, and always holding something you did not know he had.
Information is his armor. Varys is a 5 with a 6 wing, and Fives feel safe when they know more than everyone else. He has turned knowing more into an empire of little birds, children who hear everything in King’s Landing. He keeps his own life almost empty. No family, no lover, no visible desires.
The 6 wing explains his constant question about whom to serve. He jumps from Robert to Daenerys and finally toward Jon, always looking for the ruler who will keep ordinary people safe.
He is an INFJ who reads long patterns in history and people. He backs a Targaryen restoration years before it seems plausible, and his famous riddle for Tyrion, about who really holds power, is pure intuition: power exists wherever people believe it does. He is gentle and persuasive too. He visits Ned in the black cells and talks him into a false confession by appealing to Sansa’s life. His reasoning stays private and precise.
The physical world is where he is vulnerable. Varys hates violence, avoids the battlefield and distrusts magic. He survives by staying out of it, and it is the physical world that finally gets him, in the form of dragonfire.
His ending is quietly brave. Convinced that Daenerys is becoming dangerous, he writes letters about Jon’s claim, knowing it could kill him. When she sentences him, he does not beg. He tells Tyrion he hopes he is wrong, and he faces Drogon without running.
Some fans type Varys as a One, because he talks about serving the people so often. The moral streak is real. I keep Five because his method is detachment and information, and he never once tries to be the one in charge.
Strengths
- Knows everything before anyone else

- Cares about ordinary people
Weak spots
- Trusts nobody with his real plans
- Lives almost entirely in secret
- Switches loyalties when worried
- Hates confrontation and physical risk
In relationships
Who does a man with no family, no lover and almost no friends confide in? Varys, mostly by design, confides in nobody. His closest bond is with Tyrion, built on a shared love of clever conversation and a shared status as outsiders. With Littlefinger he has the best rivalry in the show: two spymasters who respect and despise each other equally.
In conflict he is calm and elusive, and he will tell you the truth only when it serves a bigger goal. His best matches are people who can match his intellect: Tyrion, his favorite sparring partner, Littlefinger, his mirror image, and Ned, whose honesty Varys admired even while it doomed him.
