All ISTP characters · How MBTI works

Officially, Creed Bratton works in quality assurance. In practice nobody, Creed included, seems sure what that involves. When a batch of paper ships with an obscene watermark, it turns out Creed was supposed to be checking the mill all along. He fixes the problem by making sure a woman named Debbie Brown takes the fall. No guilt, no panic, and a perfectly efficient result.

Where does a man like that come from? He hints at a past that includes the sixties music scene, cults as both leader and follower, and more identities than one man should need. He is a 7 with an 8 wing. Sevens chase freedom and run from pain, boredom and limits, and Creed treats life as a buffet. The 8 wing adds the ruthlessness: Creed protects Creed, and everyone else is on their own.

That is an ISTP at work, though a very strange one. Introverted thinking runs on a private logic system that makes sense only to Creed. Rules are suggestions. Facts are flexible. The only question is what works for him. Extraverted sensing keeps him alert to whatever the present moment offers. He sprouts mung beans in his desk drawer, pockets things that are not his, and seems to have survived decades by spotting opportunities nobody else notices. Introverted intuition produces the odd flashes of cryptic wisdom, those lines that sound like fortune cookies written by a pirate. Extraverted feeling is close to nonexistent. Creed barely registers who his coworkers are, and he has no interest in the office’s emotional weather. When everyone is crying, Creed is probably eating.

Does he change? Barely, and that is the joke. He is the one person the documentary crew never cracks. In the finale we learn he faked his death after the documentary aired and has been hiding from the law, and he is finally arrested. Before he goes, he gets one last moment with his guitar, singing to the people he never quite learned the names of. A fun argument says Creed is ENTP, since his bizarre stories feel like intuition running wild. I see the appeal. Still, his stories always circle back to concrete hustles and physical survival, and he keeps to himself unless there is something to gain. That is introverted thinking riding extraverted sensing.

Strengths

  • Calm in absolutely any crisis
  • Resourceful and quick to spot an opening
  • Surprisingly wise in tiny doses
  • Comfortable being exactly who he is

Weak spots

  • Morality is optional and often skipped
  • Lets other people take his blame
  • Barely knows his coworkers' names

In relationships

Creed does not do relationships so much as arrangements. He is friendly when it is useful, loyal when it is cheap, and gone when it gets complicated. Still, there is something oddly sweet about how comfortable he is with the office, the closest thing he has to a home base.

Conflict with Creed rarely happens, because he slips out before it starts. His best matches are people who do not ask questions: Ryan, who once set up his blog, Stanley, who wants nothing from anyone, and Kevin, who will happily share a snack and a scheme.
