All ISTP characters · How MBTI works

Max arrives in season two as a name on an arcade leaderboard. MADMAX has beaten Dustin’s high score on Dig Dug, and the boys are scandalized to learn the mystery champion is a girl from California with a skateboard. She does not ask to join the party. She tails them, mocks them, and waits to see if they are worth it.

That wait-and-see attitude is the ISTP in her. She is self-reliant and skeptical, and does not take anybody’s word about monsters until she sees proof. Then she acts fast and physically. When Billy beats Steve unconscious, Max drives Steve away at twelve years old, then jabs Billy with a sedative and holds Steve’s spiked bat over him. She solves problems with her hands first.

Here is the twist. The part an ISTP keeps locked away is enormous in her, and all her unspoken grief lives there. After Billy dies, she pushes everyone away, writes goodbye letters to her friends, and reads one at Billy’s grave as Vecna drags her into his curse. What saves her is a song she loves and friends who refuse to let her go.

Her sarcasm is armor. She calls Dustin and Lucas names, ignores Steve’s advice, and acts like nothing bothers her, while the people closest to her slowly learn to read the cracks.

The enneagram 8 is about not wanting to be vulnerable, which is why her worst season is spent hiding behind headphones. Eights protect themselves with toughness and control, and the 7 wing is the fun streak: the arcade, the board, the jokes at the boys’ expense.

She pays a huge price. In the season four finale she volunteers as bait for Vecna and ends up with broken bones, lost sight and a stopped heart, which Eleven starts again. In season five she spends months in a coma, trapped in Vecna’s mind, where she tells Holly to find her own way out before she finally wakes up.

Many fans call Max a 6, pointing to her anxiety and her need for her friends. That is a strong case. I still pick 8, because her default under threat is defiance.

Strengths

  • Tough and unflinching in a crisis
  • Sharp, sarcastic sense of humor
  • Fast hands and faster reflexes
  • Loyal once you have earned her trust

Weak spots

  • Pushes people away when she is hurting
  • Refuses help until it is almost too late
  • Can be cold to newcomers
  • Bottles grief instead of naming it
  • Quick to cut people down

In relationships

Max loves on probation. Lucas has to tell her the whole truth about the Upside Down before she lets him close, and Eleven gets a crash course from her in malls, magazines and dumping a boy who talks too much. Once you are in, Max is the friend who shows up with a board and a plan.

In fights she gets cutting, then distant. She needs people who will not walk away when she shuts the door: Lucas, who sat by her bed for months, Eleven, her best friend, and Steve, the reluctant big brother whose car she once drove without asking.
