All ESTP characters · How MBTI works

Uncle Fester shows up in season one like a man who has just escaped from somewhere, which he probably has. He is hiding in Jericho after a bank robbery in Boston, living off the grid and very happy to help his favorite niece break into a crime scene. Within a day he has given her the key information about Hydes and Masters and shocked a fallen Thing back to life with his own electricity.

That is an ESTP in action. Fester lives in the moment, and his problem-solving is hands-on, physical and immediate. He does not theorize about the Hyde, he tells Wednesday what he has seen out in the world and how to deal with it. When a situation needs a jolt, he delivers one, sometimes literally. Watch him read a room: he spots the exit, the weapon and the weak link before anyone else has finished saying hello. Years on the run teach you that, and Fester clearly enjoyed every one of them.

He is a 7 with an 8 wing. Sevens want freedom and fun and dislike being tied down, which is a polite way of saying Fester has robbed a lot of banks and never stays anywhere long. The 8 wing gives him the fearless side: he will fight anyone, laugh about it, and go back to his sandwich. He uses jokes to dodge every deep conversation, and it works, mostly.

Fester does not change much, and the show does not ask him to. He is a wild card who drops in when Wednesday needs someone outside the rules. In season two he gets locked up at Willow Hill, causes the blackout that frees the inmates and escapes. In the finale he rides north with Wednesday and Thing to find Enid, without a lecture, which is the most Fester kind of love there is. Plenty of adults in this show try to manage Wednesday. He is the only one who simply joins her.

You could make a case for ESFP, given how cheerful and sensation-driven he is. But Fester’s fun comes with a tactical edge: he reads danger fast, solves it with skill and cool logic, and moves on. That analytical streak pushes him to ESTP.

Strengths

  • Fearless in any situation
  • Practical knowledge of dangerous things
  • Endlessly fun to be around
  • Accepts people exactly as they are
  • Shows up when it matters

Weak spots

  • Breaks laws for sport
  • Never stays in one place for long
  • Dodges serious talks with jokes

In relationships

Fester is the relative who brings a dangerous gift and a great story to every holiday. He loves loosely and generously, never asks anyone to change, and disappears before things get serious. If you need a getaway driver, he is your man. If you need him for a regular Tuesday, good luck.

Wednesday is his favorite person on earth, and the feeling is mutual. Gomez is his brother and partner in mischief. Bianca would amuse him endlessly, a girl with a scheme and a dangerous voice, and he would probably try to recruit her for one small, harmless heist.
