Colin Bridgerton says the cruelest sentence in the whole show without knowing anyone can hear it. At the end of season two, laughing with friends, he announces he would never court Penelope Featherington. She hears every word. Colin rarely thinks about where his words land, because his mind has already moved on to the next thing.
That is a classic ENFP. His attention points at possibilities: new places, new plans, new versions of himself. In season one he proposes to Marina Thompson after a few weeks of courtship. Then he is off to Greece and the Continent with a stack of notebooks. In season three he comes home as a whole new Colin, all swagger and tales of his travels.
Sevens avoid pain by staying in motion, and Colin is a 7 with a 6 wing. After Marina, he leaves the country. When things get heavy, he reaches for a new adventure, or at least a new persona, and the rake act in season three is a seven’s costume over a bruise. The 6 wing makes him loyal and eager for his family’s approval, which is why Anthony’s opinion still matters to him so much.
Under the charm sits a private moral compass. He is hurt badly when he learns Marina tried to trick him, and he is furious when he learns who Whistledown is, because the lie offends something personal in him. He can get practical about helping someone, like turning flirting lessons for Penelope into a proper course of study. What he cannot stand is feeling stuck. Routine bores him, and the role of a third son with no title gives him nothing to stand on.
He grows when he stops running. In the carriage in season three he finally says what he feels, and after he discovers Penelope’s secret he stays to fight it out with her instead of booking a ship. By the finale he stands beside her while she tells the ton the truth, and he starts taking his own writing seriously. Some fans type season three Colin as a Three, all image and reinvention. I see it. Still, his image changes every time he gets restless, while a Three would guard one polished version of himself. The engine is escape from feeling stuck, which is the Seven core.
Strengths
- Makes anyone feel like the most interesting person present
- Curious about the whole world, maps included
- Kind, warm, and quick to defend a friend
Weak spots
- Talks before he thinks about who is listening
- Leaves town instead of facing problems
- Chases approval and reinvents himself for it
- Takes the people who wait for him for granted
In relationships
Penelope can confirm that Colin can miss what is right in front of him, sometimes for years. He falls fast, writes letters from abroad, and remembers the funny thing you said in passing. He loves enthusiastically and with very little planning.
In conflict he either charms his way out or leaves the room, and later the country. He needs someone who calls him back without chasing him. Penelope does that and more, Eloise drags him into arguments he secretly enjoys, and Benedict is the brother who understands why he keeps wandering.
