Who notices the girl nobody notices? Penelope Featherington does, and she writes it all down.

For two seasons Penelope stands at the edge of every ballroom in the loud citrus gowns her mother picks out, ignored by suitors and underestimated by almost everyone. Meanwhile, as Lady Whistledown, she shapes the entire season. She exposes Marina Thompson’s pregnancy, drives the Queen to distraction, and decides with a few lines of ink which debutante is in fashion this week.

That split life is pure enneagram 4 with a 5 wing. Fours feel unseen and different, and they guard a private identity that matters more than the public one. Penelope’s whole life is divided between the overlooked Featherington daughter and the most powerful voice in London. The 5 wing is the watcher in the corner, gathering information and keeping it.

I type her as INFJ. She works quietly in the background, joining small observations into a big picture, and sees where a season is heading long before anyone else does. She is also tuned to the mood of the whole ton. That is why Whistledown is so readable: she knows what London wants to hear, what it fears, and what it will whisper about over breakfast. The column is feeling aimed at an entire city, sharpened by a precise and cutting mind. She can be cold about the damage when she thinks it is deserved.

Appearance and being seen are what she has kept in a drawer for years. In season three she changes her wardrobe, accepts Colin’s lessons in flirting, and steps into the light, wobbly at first.

Her growth comes when she stops hiding. She loses Eloise, nearly loses Colin when he discovers the truth, and then, with the Queen in the room, steps forward at her family’s ball and says it herself. The Queen lets her keep writing, as long as she writes more kindly.

INFP is the most common alternative, and the case is strong, since so much of the column grows from private hurt, like the night she overhears Colin say he would never court her. I still lean INFJ because Whistledown is a long, careful strategy about society as a whole. Penelope writes for an audience she understands better than it understands itself.

Weak spots

  • Uses words as weapons when she is hurt
  • Keeps secrets from the people closest to her
  • Doubts she deserves to be seen

In relationships

Her feelings for Colin last years, and Penelope would rather keep them safe in silence than risk a no. That is how she loves: from a distance for a long time. When she finally lets someone in, she is warm, funny and devoted, with a sharper tongue than her sweet face suggests.

Conflict scares her, so she tends to fight on paper instead of in person, which is how friendships blow up. Her best matches see her clearly: Colin, once he stops looking past her, Eloise, the friend who forgives her and comes back, and Benedict, who would happily sketch in a corner beside her and never ask for small talk.
