All ENTJ characters · How MBTI works

Aro collects people. He can read every thought a person has ever had with a single touch, and when he meets someone with a rare gift, his first instinct is to invite them home to Volterra. Over the saga he invites Carlisle, Edward, Alice, Bella and several others to join the Volturi. Every one of them says no, and he keeps smiling anyway.

We type him ENTJ. Extraverted thinking leads: Aro runs the Volturi as the government of the vampire world, and he treats its laws as tools. Introverted intuition gives him the long game. In New Moon he lets Edward, Bella and Alice leave Volterra only after Alice shows him a vision of Bella as a vampire, with the clear condition that she must be changed or killed. In Eclipse the Volturi arrive claiming they came to clean up Victoria’s newborns, and the Cullens’ size and talents are exactly what Aro envies.

That envy is the giveaway for type 3. Threes need to be the most impressive presence in the room, and Aro is a performer, warm and delighted and theatrical, always staging his power as kindness. The Cullens threaten that image just by existing: a large, gifted, loyal coven that does not need him. In Breaking Dawn, after Irina reports Renesmee as an immortal child, the Volturi march on Forks with the Cullens’ witnesses watching. When the accusation collapses, they execute Irina and keep looking for a new reason to fight.

Here the book and the film split. In the novel, Nahuel proves that hybrids pose no danger, Bella shields the whole assembly from the Volturi’s gifts, and the Volturi decide to leave. In Breaking Dawn Part 2, Alice lets Aro see a vision of the full battle, one in which he loses his head, and Michael Sheen’s Aro chooses to back down. Either way he walks away the moment the numbers stop favoring him, which is the calculating ENTJ in a single scene.

But: ENFJ and ENTP both get suggested, because he is so charming and so curious. Charm is his costume, though. Underneath it, every move protects the institution and his place at the top of it. ENTJ.

Strengths

  • Strategic over centuries, not seasons
  • Reads people completely with one touch
  • Charming enough to disarm a room
  • Knows when to retreat

Weak spots

  • Envies anyone whose power rivals his
  • Bends the law to fit his wants
  • Treats people as collectibles
  • Needs an audience to feel secure
  • Cannot stand being refused

In relationships

Aro's idea of friendship is an acquisition. He is delighted by gifted people, eager to touch their hands and read every memory, and openly disappointed when they refuse to move to Volterra. Even his warmth toward Carlisle, his old guest, never stops being a recruiting pitch.

He works best with people he can use and respect at once. Carlisle is the old friend who turned him down, Edward is a mind reader he would love to own, and Alice is the seer he covets most, the one whose vision finally sends him home.
