Carlisle Cullen was born in 1640s London to an Anglican priest who led hunts for witches, werewolves and vampires. The hunts were mostly aimed at shadows until Carlisle found a real coven. One of them bit him.
What he did next is the whole character. He tried to kill himself rather than become what he had been raised to destroy. When that failed, he fed on a herd of deer and realized animal blood could keep him alive. He grew so indifferent to human blood that he became a doctor and surgeon, and he has never killed a human being.
That outward-facing idealism is why we read him as ENFJ. Extraverted feeling leads: Carlisle builds a family, a code and a community around a shared value, and he talks people into better versions of themselves. Introverted intuition supplies the long view. He lived with the Volturi in Italy for a few decades and left because he could not accept how they fed. He bet centuries on a different idea of what a vampire could be.
Look at the family he made. He turned Edward in 1918, during the flu epidemic in Chicago, because Edward’s dying mother asked him to. He turned Esme after her suicide attempt and married her. He turned Rosalie after she was left for dead, and then Emmett because Rosalie begged. Every Cullen he turned is someone he could not walk past.
That is the type 2 engine: love expressed as care, and a deep need to be the one who helps. On Bella’s birthday, when Jasper lunges, everyone else clears out while Carlisle stays to treat her arm, because blood does not move him. Twos tend to carry everybody, and he does: he made the treaty with the Quileute, he explains to Bella why Edward will not change her, and in Breaking Dawn he gives medical advice through a pregnancy nobody understands. In the Part 2 film, Alice’s vision even shows Aro tearing off his head, a death the book never stages.
But: INFJ is a reasonable alternative, since he is calm, private and visionary. What tips it is how much of his life he spends in the room with other people, healing them, recruiting them, persuading them. His conviction is lived out loud, not kept in a diary. Peter Facinelli’s warm, unhurried film version reads the same way. ENFJ.

- Avoids confrontation with the Volturi longer than is wise
- Can be too trusting of other vampires
- Puts himself last, every time
In relationships
If you show up at Carlisle's door bleeding, he does not ask how you got there. He patches you up first and asks about your life later, which is exactly how the Cullen family got built. He is the father figure for Edward, Rosalie, Emmett, Alice and Jasper, and he treats Bella as family long before she joins it.
He fits best with people who share his ideals but push him to act on them. Edward is the son who tests his faith, Rosalie owes him her second life, and Bella becomes the daughter-in-law who finally proves his long bet right.
