All ISFP characters · How MBTI works

A nine-year-old slave builds a protocol droid out of spare parts, then wins a podrace that most of the field never finishes. Anakin starts as a miracle. Two films later he is choking his pregnant wife on a lava planet. Typing him comes down to one question: what kind of mind makes that fall feel inevitable?

My answer is ISFP. Introverted feeling runs him, and it is huge. Anakin judges everything by how it feels to him personally, and his loyalty goes to people, never to rules. When his mother dies in his arms in a Tusken camp, he slaughters the whole camp, then confesses it to Padmé, sobbing and furious in the same breath. The Jedi Code asks him to let attachments go. For an ISFP, that is like being asked to stop having a pulse.

Extraverted sensing backs it up. He jumps out of a speeder into Coruscant traffic to catch an assassin. He lives in his reflexes.

What he lacks is a step back. Extraverted thinking, his weakest function, would let him test what Palpatine is telling him. Instead the Chancellor tells him a story at the opera about a Sith Lord who could keep people from dying, and Anakin swallows it because it matches the fear already living in him. His nightmares of Padmé dying in childbirth do the rest.

He is a 4 with a 3 wing. Fours feel uniquely misunderstood, and Anakin’s constant refrain is that the Council holds him back out of jealousy, that nobody sees what he is. The 3 wing makes him hungry for recognition, and furious when he gets a Council seat without the rank of Master. Fours also turn pain into identity, and Vader is that idea made literal: a new name, a black suit, a self built entirely out of loss.

Then comes Return of the Jedi. His son is screaming under Force lightning, and the feeling that has always run him wins one last time, pointed in the right direction. He lifts the Emperor and throws him down the shaft. Same heart, finally aimed at something good.

The best counterargument is ESTP, since he is impulsive, physical and cocky. I get it. But an ESTP shrugs off what feels unfair. Anakin broods over it for years, and that inward intensity is why I stay with ISFP.

Strengths

  • Natural talent at almost anything physical
  • Fiercely devoted to the people he loves
  • Brave to the point of recklessness
  • Capable of a huge turn back toward good

Weak spots

  • Fear of loss bends every decision
  • Jealous and quick to feel wronged
  • Easily flattered by the wrong mentor
  • Explodes instead of talking things through
  • Keeps dangerous secrets from people he loves

In relationships

His love is a bonfire, and bonfires do not do moderation. He wants all of a person, all of the time, and he reads any distance as rejection. That is beautiful in a love letter and dangerous in real life, which is how Padmé ends up on Mustafar with a man she no longer recognizes.

Anakin needs partners who are calm without being cold, people who can hold his feelings without being swept away by them. Obi-Wan comes closest, as the brother who keeps trying. Padmé sees the best of him, and Luke, years later, is the one who refuses to stop seeing it, even with a mask in the way.
