All ENFP characters · How MBTI works

Seong Gi-hun’s first episode tells you almost everything. He takes money from his mother’s bank account to bet on horses, gets robbed by a pickpocket, and is still trying to buy his daughter a birthday present that night. Broke, impulsive, sentimental, and somehow not defeated. Three seasons later, that same man carries a newborn across a jump rope bridge.

We read him as an ENFP. His mind lives in what could happen next: another plan, another chance, another way out. In the dalgona game he picks the umbrella, the hardest shape on offer, and instead of freezing he starts licking the back of the candy to soften it. It looks ridiculous and it works. Under the improvising sits a private moral code he will not negotiate. Lee Jung-jae called him stubborn, and that is the word.

His motive is the helper’s. As a 2 with a growing 1 wing, Gi-hun needs to be good to people, and a small part of him needs them to see it. After he wins, he cannot spend the prize on himself for a year. He gives money to Sang-woo’s mother, finds Sae-byeok’s brother Cheol, and later pays a broker to bring Cheol’s mother out of North Korea.

The shadow of all that warmth is self-deception. In the marbles game he lies to an old man he believes has dementia, and he only wins because Oh Il-nam lets him. He is a decent person who does indecent things under pressure and then cannot live with them.

Season two turns the helper into a crusader. Red hair, a fortified hotel, his former loan shark on the payroll, and one goal: end the games. He warns everyone during Red Light, Green Light, then watches his rebellion collapse and his friend Jung-bae executed in front of him. In season three he strangles Dae-ho, the one person he sets out to kill, and nearly ends his own life. Then he refuses the Front Man’s offer to murder sleeping players, carries a baby to the last platform, and jumps.

The best case against ENFP is ESFP. He gambles, he brawls, he lives loudly in the present. But look at what drives each big choice: a picture of how things should be, with everyone alive and nobody paying for it. That is an ideal, not an appetite.

Strengths

  • Refuses to give up on strangers
  • Improvises brilliantly under pressure
  • Generous with money and time
  • Keeps promises made to the dead
  • Brave when it counts most

Weak spots

  • Gambles with money he does not have
  • Lets rage steer big decisions
  • Believes he can save everyone
  • Blames himself, then others, for every loss

In relationships

What kind of friend walks away from a flight to see his daughter because he spotted a stranger being recruited? This one. Gi-hun cares in grand, messy gestures, and he keeps showing up for people long after it has started to cost him everything.

He needs someone with a cooler head who shares his conscience. Sae-byeok gave him that for a few days, and her promise shaped the rest of his life. Ali showed him that kindness could survive on the island. Jun-ho has the same stubborn sense of justice and spent two seasons trying to reach the same place. Gi-hun is at his worst with people who treat others as numbers, which is why Sang-woo and In-ho both cut so deep.
