Rosalie Hale is the only Cullen who looks at Bella’s big choice and basically asks if she has lost her mind. Rosalie was born in 1915 in Rochester, New York, and engaged to a wealthy young man named Royce King II. One night Royce and his drunk friends assaulted her and left her for dead in the street. Carlisle smelled her blood, found her and turned her. She later killed every one of the men who did it, and she never drank their blood. She has never tasted human blood at all.
That backstory is why we read her as a type 3. Threes want to be valued and admired, and the human Rosalie measured her worth that way; even the canon calls her vain and shallow back then. What she lost was not the beauty, since she kept that forever. She lost the future that was supposed to come with it, the husband and the children, and she never made peace with the trade.
Her MBTI reads as ESTJ. Extraverted thinking makes her direct and decisive, the one who names the problem out loud while everyone else is being polite. Introverted sensing ties her to the past, to what she had and to how a normal life is supposed to go. In New Moon she is the one Cullen besides Edward who opposes turning Bella. In Eclipse she sits Bella down and tells her own story, hoping it will convince her to stay human. Both moves come from the same instinct: protect the life that works.
Her worst mistake comes from that bluntness. She tells Edward that Bella is dead, and he heads for Volterra. Her best moment comes from it too. In Breaking Dawn, when Edward wants the pregnancy ended, Bella calls Rosalie for help, and Rosalie stands guard over her even while Carlisle and Edward fear for Bella’s life. Afterward she helps raise Renesmee, the closest thing to a daughter she was ever going to get.
But: ESTP gets suggested a lot, because she is fiery and acts fast. We disagree. Rosalie is not chasing thrills. She is defending a picture of how life is supposed to go, and she judges people by whether they respect it. Nikki Reed’s sharper film version only underlines that. ESTJ.
Strengths
- Says the hard thing nobody else will
- Protects what she values with total commitment
- Knows exactly what she wants
Weak spots
- Holds grudges for years
- Lets envy turn into cruelty
- Judges choices she would never make
- Too proud to admit she was wrong
In relationships
Rosalie starts cold. For most of the first three books she treats Bella like a mistake the family is making, partly out of jealousy and partly out of grief. Once she decides you are worth protecting, though, she is the most ferocious ally in the house, as Bella learns in Breaking Dawn.
Emmett is her match: she carried him through the mountains and begged Carlisle to save him, and his easy humor softens her edges. Bella, of all people, becomes her friend through Renesmee, and Carlisle remains the father who gave her a second life.
