Nancy Wheeler would like you to check her work. When Barb disappears in season one, the police shrug, so Nancy builds her own case: a bear trap, a gun, a plan to lure the monster out with blood. In season four she tracks down Victor Creel in an asylum, talks her way inside, and gets the story everyone else missed. This is a person who believes problems get solved by doing the next concrete step.
That is ESTJ in a sentence. Extraverted thinking organizes reality into tasks, and a firm memory of facts and what is owed keeps her honest. Barb never leaves her. In season two she cannot stomach the lie that Barb ran away, and sitting through dinner with Barb’s parents nearly breaks her. Getting the truth out, with Jonathan, a tape recorder and a conspiracy-minded reporter, becomes her mission.
Her emotional life is the messy part. Restless with small-town options and unable to explain her own heart, she moves from Steve to Jonathan to a confusing stretch of both. In season five she and Jonathan part on good terms while the lab around them melts.
Her friendships get the same treatment as her cases. She is loyal, a little demanding, and quick to point out what you are doing wrong, which is how she shows she believes you can do better.
The enneagram 1 shows in how she gets angry. Ones live by an internal standard of right and wrong and burn when the world does not match it. At the Hawkins Post in season three, the men laugh at her and call her Nancy Drew, and she chases the rat story anyway. The 2 wing is the older sister who would walk into the Upside Down to get Mike and Holly back.
You could argue she is an 8, since she is so tough and confrontational. I take it seriously. But Eights fight against being controlled, while Nancy fights for what is right, and she feels guilty about what she failed to do. That guilt is a One signature.
By the epilogue she has dropped out of Emerson College to chase the work she always wanted, reporting.
Strengths

- Protects her family at any cost

- Finds it hard to name what she feels
- Pushes herself past every limit
- Impatient with slower thinkers
In relationships
Nancy is the person who answers a feeling with a checklist. She wants a partner who is also a teammate, and both Steve and Jonathan learn that being cute is not enough. She is closest to people who will take the case with her, which is why Robin, after a rocky start, becomes a real friend in season four.
In conflict Nancy is precise and a little cold, a prosecutor laying out the evidence. Her best matches can keep up and push back: Steve, who brings out her softer side, Lucas, who would never pad a plan with fluff, and Joyce, who shares her refusal to accept the official story.
