Mr. D calls Percy Peter Johnson. Repeatedly. On purpose. He knows the boy’s name perfectly well, and the joke is that he refuses to give a hero the satisfaction of being remembered. Dionysus, god of wine, was sentenced by Zeus to run Camp Half-Blood for a hundred years after chasing a nymph he was told to leave alone. He is banned from wine, so he drinks Diet Coke and plays pinochle with Chiron while the campers try not to annoy him.

His type is ENTP. The core is restless, provocative extraverted intuition: he plays with words, with names and with people’s nerves. There is the wrong-name gag, the bored threats, and the long lecture about Theseus abandoning Ariadne to explain why he hates heroes. Right after Annabeth is captured he calls her Annie Bell, and Percy nearly hits him for it. He argues the way a cat knocks things off a table, partly to see what falls. Behind it sits dry, sharp logic that punctures hero worship fast.

Type 7 makes the punishment fit the god. Sevens chase pleasure and run from pain, and Zeus took away the one pleasure Dionysus is named for. His performance of boredom keeps grief at arm’s length. It cracks only a few times: when his son Castor dies in the Battle of the Labyrinth, and when he asks Percy to look after his other son, Pollux, before the final battle.

Under the sarcasm, he helps more than he admits. He finishes off Dr. Thorn with grapevines when the kids are cornered, cures Chris Rodriguez of madness, and tells Percy privately that gods need heroes, then promises to deny he ever said it. After the war, Zeus cuts his sentence to fifty years. Earlier, he ties Percy and his pegasus to the top of the Chrysler Building with vines to stop him sneaking off on a quest, then lets him go anyway. ISTP is a fair read, given how lazy and detached he looks. But a detached ISTP would simply ignore Percy, and Mr. D cannot resist needling him. Jason Mantzoukas plays him in the Disney+ series.

Strengths

  • Razor-sharp wit
  • Helps when it counts, quietly
  • Sees through hero worship

Weak spots

  • Petty and dismissive
  • Holds every hero responsible for Theseus
  • Hides grief behind sarcasm

In relationships

Is there anyone Mr. D likes? A short list: Ariadne, his sons Castor and Pollux, and, though he would rather drink tap water than say so, a few campers. He shows care through grudging favours, like curing a boy's madness or tangling a pegasus in vines before Percy can do something stupid.

He pairs best with people who can take an insult and toss one back. Chiron has played pinochle with him for years and puts up with all of it. Percy, his favourite target, earns his respect by refusing to be impressed by him. And Nico, who first burst in calling him the wine dude, was an annoyance at first, though the two end up close in later books.
