Gaara has the kanji for love carved into his forehead, and he put it there himself. That one fact tells you how lonely his childhood was. The One-Tail was sealed inside him before he was born, and his father kept sending assassins after him. By the Chunin Exams, he is a boy who says he fights only for himself and loves only himself.
Fours feel that something everyone else has is missing in them, and Gaara believed love itself was missing from his life. He is a 4 with a 5 wing, which makes him withdraw and observe rather than spill his feelings. His growth is a slow rewrite of that story. During the war, his reanimated father admits that Gaara’s mother loved him, and that her will lived in the sand that always shielded him. The boy who thought nobody loved him learns he was loved from the start.
I type him as INFJ in both halves of his story. Introverted intuition, the lead, makes him inward and symbolic. He builds a whole philosophy out of his pain: he exists to kill others, because killing proves he exists.
What Naruto reaches is extraverted feeling. In their fight, Naruto keeps getting up for his friends, and Gaara cannot understand where that strength comes from. Afterward he starts asking, sincerely, how to matter to other people. When the Fourth Shinobi World War begins, he stands in front of an army of ninja who used to be enemies and tells them they have all suffered the same pain, so there are no enemies here.
The weaker functions dominate his early years. Introverted thinking keeps him clinical, studying Rock Lee like a problem before crushing his arm and leg in the sand. Inferior extraverted sensing shows in his strange relationship with his own body: his sand blocks every attack before he moves, and he barely sleeps, afraid of what the beast inside him will do. Some fans type Gaara as ISTJ, especially as the steady, dutiful Kazekage. It is a solid read of his adult side. I keep INFJ because his leadership grows out of a personal revelation about connection, and he leads by naming what people feel rather than by enforcing tradition.
Strengths
- Turns his own pain into empathy
- Calm, steady leadership under pressure
- Brave enough to change completely
- Loyal to the people who reached him
Weak spots
- Withdraws when he feels misunderstood
- Struggles to put emotions into words
- Was once brutally cold to strangers
- Defines himself by the worst things done to him
In relationships
Like someone who learned late how it works, Gaara handles love carefully. His bond with Naruto is the turning point of his life: two jinchuriki, one who gave up on people and one who refused to. After that he starts building real relationships with Temari and Kankuro, the siblings who were scared of him for years, and they would die for him by the time Shippuden starts.
He handles conflict calmly and directly, without raising his voice. His best matches are people who show him patience: Naruto, his mirror and best friend, Rock Lee, whom he once almost killed and later saved from Kimimaro, and Shikamaru, his future brother-in-law and fellow quiet strategist.
