All INTP characters · How MBTI works

Ask most shonen heroes about their dream and you get a speech about becoming the strongest. Ask Shikamaru Nara and you get a plan for a perfectly average life: be an ordinary ninja, marry a woman who is neither too pretty nor too plain, have two kids, retire, and watch clouds. His IQ is said to be over 200. He would like to use it as little as possible.

That dream is classic enneagram 9. Nines want peace and dislike friction, and their signature weakness is inertia. He does the minimum until something forces his hand. His 1 wing explains why, once he acts, he does it properly and takes responsibility for every result.

In MBTI he is an INTP. Introverted thinking builds models of how things work, and his favorite model is a shogi board. Extraverted intuition sees possibilities and traps. In the Chunin Exam finals against Temari, he lures her across the arena using the shadow of his own jacket and a hole in the ground, wins on paper, then forfeits because he cannot be bothered.

His weaker functions, introverted sensing and extraverted feeling, are where his story gets heavy. As a brand new chunin he leads the mission to bring Sasuke back, and nearly every teammate ends up badly hurt. He breaks down crying in the hospital and promises himself that next time he will do it right.

Then, in Shippuden, Hidan kills Asuma. Shikamaru sits through a game of shogi with his father, Shikaku, until his father pushes him to let the grief out. Then he plans the revenge with total focus and buries Hidan in the Nara forest.

That is the turn. Asuma once told him that in shogi the king is the next generation, the kids who have not been born yet, and Shikamaru takes that to heart. By the war he is directing whole divisions, and later he becomes Naruto’s right-hand advisor, still complaining about every page of paperwork.

Some argue he is an INTJ, since he thinks so many steps ahead and ends up as a long-term strategist. Fair. Still, Shikamaru’s plans are puzzles he solves on the spot, not a vision he chases. Left alone, he would never start one. That is an introverted thinker waiting for a reason, not an intuitive leader pulling the world toward a goal.

Strengths

  • Sees ten moves ahead in any fight
  • Stays calm when plans fall apart
  • Takes responsibility for his team

Weak spots

  • Avoids effort until forced
  • Complains about nearly everything
  • Underestimates himself as a leader
  • Bottles grief until it becomes a plan

In relationships

A low-maintenance friend is what Shikamaru is. He will not text you every day, but he will put his life on the line for you and pretend it was a hassle. His friendship with Choji is one of the warmest in the series, and with Temari he finds someone bossy enough to drag him out of bed and sharp enough to keep up with him.

In conflict he sighs, says it is annoying, then calmly solves it. His best matches are people with energy and patience: Naruto, the friend he quietly backs as Hokage, Gaara, his future brother-in-law, and Kakashi, a fellow genius who also loves a nap.
