Every season needs a villain in a very good dress, and Cressida Cowper has been auditioning for the role since episode one. She sneers at Penelope, chases whichever eligible man the season offers, and treats a ballroom like a trading floor.
Her arc ends badly. The real Whistledown publishes, Cressida’s claim collapses, and her family sends her away from London. It is not a redemption, but it is the first time the show lets you feel sorry for her.
The trading floor is the right image, because she is an ESTJ. She sizes up the market, picks a target and goes for it, from Prince Friedrich in season one to Lord Debling in season three. She is also a master of the rules. She knows every custom, every rank and every whisper about who sits where, and she uses that knowledge like a fan with blades in it.
Season three shows what sits underneath. Her father is cold and controlling, and her future depends on a marriage she cannot seem to land. When she is cornered she produces bold improvised schemes. The boldest is standing up in front of the ton and claiming to be Lady Whistledown, hoping the Queen’s reward will buy her freedom. Charlotte does not believe her and demands proof. Cressida then tries to blackmail Penelope for ten thousand pounds. The inner life she was never allowed to have shows in her lonely friendship with Eloise.
As a Three with a 4 wing, she needs to be admired and to succeed, and she fears being worthless without her wins. Cressida’s whole identity is the perfect debutante, and every season she does not marry is a public failure. The 4 wing is the private envy and melancholy, the sense that everyone else got a better story.
Some fans call her an ESTP, because her schemes in season three are reckless and improvised. I see that. Still, her default mode for two and a half seasons is working inside the rules of the marriage market and winning by them. She only improvises when the system has already failed her, which is what an ESTJ does under pressure.
Strengths
- Knows every rule of the social game
- Bold and decisive when she wants something
- Composed in public under any pressure
- Loyal, briefly, to the rare real friend
Weak spots
- Cruel to anyone she sees as a rival
- Measures her worth in public wins
- Lies when cornered instead of asking for help
In relationships
For a few episodes in season three, Cressida has someone who likes her without a reason, and that makes her friendship with Eloise so striking. Before that, she treats relationships as alliances: friends picked for their rank, suitors for their title, both dropped when the numbers change.
In conflict she goes for the throat and never apologizes first. Her healthiest matches would see through her and stay anyway: Eloise, who looked past the satin, Queen Charlotte, who would keep her honest by sheer terror, and Anthony, whose rule-bound world she would understand perfectly.
