For someone famous for following rules, Hermione Granger breaks a surprising number of them. She sets Snape’s robes on fire during a Quidditch match. She lies to McGonagall to cover for two boys she barely knows. She brews Polyjuice Potion in a girls’ bathroom in second year. None of this is chaos. Hermione follows rules right up until a rule stands between her and the right result, and that is the mark of a One.
Ones carry an inner critic and a strong sense of how things ought to be, and Hermione cannot see injustice and leave it alone. She founds S.P.E.W. in fourth year and spends fifth year hiding knitted hats around Gryffindor Tower for elves who mostly do not want them. The Two wing makes her principles personal. She defends Hagrid, helps Neville, and nags Harry about homework because she cares about him.
ESTJ explains how she does all this. She organizes the outside world: schedules, lists, revision timetables, a library book for every crisis. When the trio needs a plan, she has usually done the research already. A huge memory for detail and a loyalty to proven methods round it out, which is why she packs a small beaded bag with a tent, clothes and half a library before anyone else realizes they will need to run.
Her private feelings are the shaky part. She knows what is efficient and correct, but sorting out her own heart is much harder. Ask her to explain why Ron kissing Lavender Brown hurts so much and she sends a flock of conjured birds at his head instead. Her biggest choice happens before the last book even starts. She changes her parents’ memories so they forget they ever had a daughter, then sends them to Australia under new names. It is the most Hermione move possible: painful, correct, well researched, and made alone with nobody to help carry it.
ISTJ is the other popular answer, and it has a point, since she loves books and quiet study. Still, Hermione keeps pushing her plans onto other people, founding groups, giving orders and answering out loud in class. Her thinking aims outward.
Strengths
- Researches every problem before it becomes a crisis
- Stands up for anyone treated unfairly
- Stays organized when everyone else panics
- Breaks rules when the reason is right
- Uses her brain as a weapon and a shield
Weak spots
- Assumes her plan is the only sensible one
- Lectures when a hug would work better
- Starts causes without asking the people involved
In relationships
Effort is how Hermione says I love you. She makes revision timetables for friends who did not ask, checks your essays, and reads up on whatever is hurting you. Her friendship with Harry and Ron starts after they save her from a troll, and she spends the next six years quietly saving them back.
In conflict she argues hard and expects to win on facts. Ron drives her up the wall because he never fights on facts, and somehow that is what she needs. Her best matches are Ron, who makes her laugh at herself, Harry, who trusts her brain completely, and McGonagall, who probably sees a younger version of herself in her.
