Zuko’s arc is so famous that people who have never watched the show have heard about it. Banished at thirteen, scarred by his own father, obsessed with capturing the Avatar to win back his honor: that is the start. The end is a young Fire Lord trying to build peace. Everything in between is a guy fighting with himself.
He is a Four with a 3 wing. Fours feel that something essential is missing in them, and they search hard for an identity that feels real. Zuko’s constant question is who he is supposed to be. The 3 wing is the part that wants his father’s approval and a crown to prove his worth. In Ba Sing Se he chooses Azula, gets everything he thought he wanted, and is miserable anyway, which is the most Four outcome imaginable.
I type him as ISFP, with introverted feeling as the lead: a private inner code that he feels intensely and struggles to put into words. It is why he spoke up in the war meeting that got him banished. Sacrificing a division of new recruits felt wrong, so he said so. Extraverted sensing makes him physical and immediate. He solves problems by charging at them, often literally, and he is happiest doing something with his hands or his swords. The Blue Spirit is the perfect ISFP side project, a secret identity where he can act on his values with nobody watching.
The long game is where he stumbles. He has no plan beyond catching the Avatar, and when he tries to strategize or explain himself, it falls apart. His first attempt to join Team Avatar at the Western Air Temple is a stiff, rehearsed speech that goes about as well as you would expect.
His growth comes when he stops asking his father to define him. On the Day of Black Sun he confronts Ozai and walks out. He relearns firebending from the dragons with Aang, apologizes to Iroh, and takes a lightning bolt for Katara in the final Agni Kai.
Some fans type him ESTP because he is action-first and hot-tempered. It is a fair point. Still, his temper always comes from a wounded inner value system, and his biggest scenes are about identity and shame. That is introverted feeling at the wheel.
Strengths
- Relentless once he commits to something
- Capable of deep, honest self-reflection, eventually
- Brave enough to defy his own father
Weak spots
- Explosive temper that burns bridges
- Chases approval from the wrong people
- Terrible at explaining his own feelings
- Can wallow in shame instead of acting
In relationships
What does a boy who was never loved right learn about love? Zuko loves intensely and awkwardly. With Mai he finds someone as gloomy as he is, and their dates are a masterclass in mutual sulking. With Iroh he learns what a real father looks like, and their reunion at the White Lotus camp is the most cathartic hug in the series.
He fights hot and apologizes late. He needs people who stay steady when he flares up and who call out his nonsense without leaving. Iroh is the obvious match, Mai gets his moods without needing an explanation, and Katara holds him to account in a way he respects.
