All ESFJ characters · How MBTI works

Andy Bernard arrives in Scranton from Stamford with a plan to rise to the top. Repeat people’s names, mirror their personalities, and never be the first to let go of a handshake. It is the most Andy strategy imaginable, and it falls apart within weeks. Jim hides his phone in the ceiling and calls it over and over until Andy punches a hole in the wall and gets sent to anger management. Those two scenes, the charm offensive and the explosion, are his whole type.

Under the charm is a 3 with a 2 wing. Threes need to be seen as successful, and Andy’s whole identity hangs on status: the right school, the right title, the right girl. The 2 wing makes his ambition social. He wants to win, but mostly he wants to be loved for winning.

Type-wise, he is an ESFJ. Extraverted feeling is tuned to what people think of him. He mirrors, flatters and nicknames, he reads the room to find the role that will make him popular, and he cannot stand being disliked. Introverted sensing is his loyalty to the past. Cornell is his favorite subject, his a cappella group Here Comes Treble is his golden age, and he treats old traditions like sacred texts. The goofy side, the Nard Dog persona, the banjo, the sudden bursts of silly ideas, is extraverted intuition at play.

Introverted thinking, his weakest function, is where it goes wrong. Under stress, logic leaves the building. The wall punch, the late night rants, the giant swings in mood: when Andy is cornered, he cannot step back and reason it through.

His arc is a rollercoaster. He gets the regional manager job, loves Erin, then sails away on his family’s boat for three months and comes back to find her with Pete. He quits to chase fame, melts down on a singing competition, and becomes an internet joke. In the end he lands a job in the admissions office at Cornell, which is the most fitting happy ending in television.

A solid argument types Andy as ENFP, because of the whimsy and the creative bursts. I get it. Still, his choices keep pulling him back to the familiar: Cornell, singing, family approval. His fun is built on nostalgia, not on new frontiers.

Strengths

  • Warm, enthusiastic, and eager to help
  • Musically gifted and fun at any party
  • Loyal to friends and old traditions
  • Keeps trying no matter how often he falls

Weak spots

  • Needs everyone to like him at all times
  • Short temper hidden under the charm
  • Lets status decide what he wants
  • Runs from problems, sometimes on a boat

In relationships

Serenades, big dates, and a cute, awkward romance with Erin: Andy loves sweetly and a little theatrically. But he also leaves for three months and expects everything to wait for him, which tells you how much his love depends on being admired.

In conflict he swings between apologizing too much and exploding. His best matches are Michael, who shares his need for an audience, Kevin, his fellow music lover, and Pam, who is kind to him when he is at his most ridiculous.
