All ESFJ characters · How MBTI works

You hear Janice before you see her. The nasal voice, the laugh that sounds like a car alarm, the three-word greeting that half the planet can still imitate. She turns up in most seasons of Friends, which is a record for someone the main characters keep trying to escape.

Janice is an ESFJ, all outward warmth. She hugs, shares, gushes and assumes that everyone is as delighted to see her as she is to see them. She tells you about her husband, her kids and her feelings within the first two minutes, because to Janice emotional openness is just good manners.

Look at her loop. Janice keeps returning to the familiar, and the familiar is Chandler.

Janice dates Chandler in season one, again from the end of season two, and pops back into his life even after she has a daughter with Gary, the Mattress King, and later a son with Sid. She is in labor in the same hospital as Rachel in the season eight finale, and in season ten she makes an offer on the house next door to Chandler and Monica. Comfort is a person to her, and she does not let go easily. Nostalgia is her home address.

Her weakness is hints. Chandler fakes a move to Yemen to get away from her, and she helps him pack and sees him off at the airport. A logic-first person would have spotted the escape. Janice sees love, and starts planning the next hello with total confidence.

She is a Two, the type that gives affection and needs it back, and feels most alive when someone needs them. To be fair, Janice has real generosity. In season three, when her husband Gary wants to try again, Chandler tells her to give the marriage another chance, and she does. In season ten she lets Chandler go for good with nothing worse than a goodbye kiss.

Plenty of fans type her ESFP, since she is loud, sensual and pleasure-seeking. I see the appeal. Still, everything she does is relational. She is not chasing experiences, she is chasing closeness.

Strengths

  • Warm and open from the first minute
  • Loyal to the people she loves
  • Unbothered by what others think
  • Makes any gathering louder and livelier

Weak spots

  • Misses obvious hints
  • Overshares with near strangers
  • Clings to relationships past their expiry date
  • Can be exhausting in small rooms
  • Needs to be needed

In relationships

Janice loves at full volume. She wants closeness, compliments and constant contact, and she keeps choosing Chandler even when he keeps running away. Under the noise is a woman who would do a lot for the people she loves, including giving a marriage another try when it is best for her child.

In conflict she gets loud, cries a little and then laughs again. Her best matches would be people who enjoy big energy: Joey, if he could stand the laugh, Rachel, who shares her love of gossip, and Chandler, who keeps coming back to her as much as she comes back to him.
