All ESFP characters · How MBTI works

In season one, Steve Harrington is the guy you are supposed to hate. He has the hair, the car, and the friends. He beats up Jonathan over a photograph, and then, a few episodes later, he is swinging a bat at a Demogorgon at the Byers house and he never leaves the fight again. Few TV characters pull off a turn that big without losing what made them fun.

The ESFP in him lives in the present: reading the room, reacting fast, swinging first. He is not a planner. In season three it takes Robin, Dustin and Erica to crack the Russian code while Steve scoops ice cream in a sailor hat, and he does not mind. His moral core is quiet. When he decides something is right, like protecting Dustin or owning his mess with Nancy, he commits.

The enneagram 2 with a 3 wing fits the second act of his life. Twos find their worth in being needed, and Steve’s babysitting job is one he gave himself. The 3 wing is the old King Steve, still alive in the hair routine and the need to look good doing it. In season four, in the Upside Down, he describes his dream of an RV and six kids to Nancy. That is a Two talking.

Steve is also the group’s most reliable punching bag. He gets knocked out by Billy, drugged by Russians and thrown around by Demogorgons, and still shows up to the next fight with a joke and a fresh bandage. Loyalty is the whole personality, and he would rather be teased for the hair than admit how much he worries about every kid he looks after. That mix of vanity and devotion is why audiences love him.

ESFPs get underestimated, and Steve gets it from everyone, including himself. Plenty of people type him ESTP, citing his fearless, physical style. It is close. But ESTPs tend to strategize in the moment, and Steve leads with loyalty and gut values, then improvises the rest. His growth is choosing a different kind of status. In the epilogue he stays in Hawkins as a coach for the Little League team, the most Steve ending imaginable.

Strengths

  • Jumps into danger for other people's kids
  • Owns his mistakes and changes
  • Great with kids, despite himself
  • Charming in any room
  • Cracks the funniest line at the worst time

Weak spots

  • Last to understand the plan
  • Still a little vain about the hair
  • Takes too many hits for others

In relationships

Steve loves like a golden retriever with a nail bat. He apologizes to Nancy, which King Steve would never do, and he carries a torch for her long after she moves on. His friendship with Robin turns into one of the most honest relationships in the show, built over scoops of ice cream and a Russian truth serum.

In conflict he gets defensive, then over-apologizes. He matches best with people who need a big brother but give back plenty of sass: Dustin, his favorite little brother, Nancy, who makes him better, and Max, whom he would never admit he adores.
