All ISFP characters · How MBTI works

How does a girl who hates being looked at end up at the center of a vampire feud, a werewolf split and a showdown with the Volturi? Bella Swan would tell you it just happened to her. Read the saga closely and you see the opposite. Almost every big turn in the story happens because Bella quietly decided something and then refused to move.

That stubborn quiet is why we type her ISFP. Her decisions come from a private value system she rarely explains, which is introverted feeling at work. She moves from Phoenix to Forks so her mother can spend time with her new husband, and she does it without a speech. In Breaking Dawn she refuses to end the pregnancy when Edward and Jacob beg her to, and she secretly phones Rosalie so nobody can overrule her. Private values look soft until you hit the wall. Then you learn the wall is the whole person.

Her sensing side shows in how much she lives in her body. She faints when the biology class types blood. In New Moon, after months of numb grief, she discovers that reckless physical thrills make her hear Edward’s voice, so she rides motorcycles with Jacob and jumps off a cliff into the ocean at La Push. That is someone who needs something real, felt in the body, right now, not someone soothing herself with theories.

The nine is in how she keeps the surface calm. Nines go along, absorb other people’s moods and avoid scenes, and Bella does all three: she turns down three boys for the dance and skips the whole spectacle, she goes quiet for months after Edward leaves, and the hospital in Phoenix hears a cover story about a fall from a window. The other face of a nine is slow, total stubbornness, and that is what wins her the life she wants. In Breaking Dawn she learns she is a shield, a power Edward never read past, which might be the most nine power ever written: nobody gets inside her head unless she lets them.

But: plenty of readers argue for INFP, pointing at her narration, which is full of inner monologue and self-doubt. Fair. Still, she chooses with her gut and her senses, not with grand imagined futures, and Kristen Stewart plays her even more physical and wordless. ISFP stays.

Strengths

  • Loyal to the people she picks, no matter the cost
  • Brave when it counts, in her own quiet way
  • Observant about small physical details
  • Does not need applause to stand firm

Weak spots

  • Goes numb instead of asking for help
  • Hides the truth to avoid a scene
  • Takes huge risks with her own safety
  • Underestimates herself out loud

In relationships

Watch Bella at the Cullens' house and you see how she loves: she sits close, says little, and notices everything. She does not do grand declarations. She does grand decisions, like flying to Italy with Alice to stop Edward from walking into the sun, and she expects the people she loves to trust her judgment without a debate.

She does best with partners who respect her stubbornness instead of managing it. Edward has to learn that the hard way. Jacob gives her warmth and noise when she has none, and Rosalie, once she stops resenting Bella, becomes the ally who backs her hardest choice.
