All ESTP characters · How MBTI works

Tsunade is known across the ninja world by two nicknames. One is the Slug Princess, a legendary sannin and the best medical ninja alive. The other is the Legendary Sucker, because she gambles constantly and almost always loses. Both are accurate, and the gap between them is where her personality lives.

Eights protect themselves by being strong and refusing to look weak, and Tsunade lost the two people she loved most, her little brother Nawaki and her partner Dan, both of whom dreamed of becoming Hokage. She is an 8 with a 7 wing. Her answer was to stop caring about the title and the village. She even developed a terror of blood, which for a medic is about as bad as it gets. The 7 wing is the escape hatch: drinking, gambling and running from every reminder.

As an ESTP, her lead function is extraverted sensing, pure physical presence: punches that split the ground, sake, dice and instant decisions. When Jiraiya and Naruto track her down, she is drifting from town to town with Shizune trailing behind her, living entirely in the moment because the past hurts too much. Introverted thinking is the clinical analyst behind her medical genius.

Then Naruto shows up, loud and stubborn and talking about becoming Hokage, and she sees Nawaki all over again. When Kabuto attacks, Naruto throws himself in the way and nearly dies, and Tsunade pushes past her fear of blood to save him. She takes the title of Fifth Hokage. Her weakest function, introverted intuition, finally switches on: for the first time in years she believes in the future again.

The fierce care she hides behind her temper is extraverted feeling. As Hokage she spreads her chakra through Katsuyu to keep villagers alive during Pain’s attack and falls into a coma for her trouble.

Many fans type Tsunade as ESTJ, since she runs the village with a firm hand and shouts orders all day. That fits her as Hokage. Still, before the job she was a drifter who lived for the next bet and the next drink, and even as leader she makes fast, gut-level calls rather than following procedure. The paperwork was always more Shizune’s department.

  • Strength that ends arguments quickly
  • Protects her people without hesitation
  • Brutally honest about bad odds

Weak spots

  • Explosive temper, often aimed at Naruto
  • Avoids commitment to protect herself
  • Terrible with money and worse with luck
  • Pushes away anyone she might lose

In relationships

Tsunade is terrified of losing anyone else, which is why she loves so fiercely. Her bond with Naruto is part grandmother, part sparring partner. He calls her Granny, she flattens him in their very first fight, and she would fight a god for him. Jiraiya pursued her for decades, and his death hits her much harder than she ever let him see while he was alive.

Conflict with Tsunade is loud and short, and something usually breaks. Her best matches are people who stand up to her: Naruto, who reminded her why the village matters, Sakura, her loyal apprentice, and Jiraiya, her teammate and most stubborn admirer.
