All INFJ characters · How MBTI works

Chiron spends the first book pretending to be a Latin teacher in a wheelchair.

As Mr. Brunner at Yancy Academy, he pushes Percy harder than other students, because he can see what Percy could become and knows how little time is left. When a Fury attacks at the museum, he tosses Percy a pen that turns into a sword, then acts as if nothing happened. Deep care plus careful secrecy: that combination is the whole centaur.

He is an INFJ, and the lead function is introverted intuition, a long view of where things are heading. He has trained heroes for thousands of years and knows how their stories tend to end. That is why he keeps the full Great Prophecy from Percy until The Last Olympian, and why he hopes at first that Percy’s father is a minor god, for the boy’s own safety.

Supporting that is warm, attentive extraverted feeling. He is remarkably patient with Clarisse, a father figure to Annabeth, and the steady voice whenever campers fall apart. His anger is rare. When it shows, Percy describes the tone as steely calm, which is somehow scarier than shouting.

Underneath sits a type 1, the reformer with a strict inner rulebook. Chiron keeps his oaths even when it costs him, and he treats teaching heroes like a sacred duty. Ones can be rigid, and so can he: he would sooner frustrate Percy than reveal a prophecy too early.

Being a son of Kronos follows him around. In The Sea of Monsters he is blamed for poisoning Thalia’s tree and fired, then he comes back with his rowdy centaur cousins, the Party Ponies, to rescue the kids anyway. In the final war he goes straight at his father, knowing he cannot win, and gets thrown into a wall. The Disney+ series, with Glynn Turman, gives him a brace on his left hind leg from an old war injury.

You could argue ISFJ, since he is so devoted to tradition and routine. Pinochle with Mr. D, the same camp running the same way year after year. But his real gift is foresight. He reads people and prophecies years ahead, and that is intuition doing the heavy lifting.

Strengths

  • Endless patience
  • Sees potential before anyone else
  • Steady in a crisis
  • Brave enough to face his own father

Weak spots

  • Keeps secrets too long
  • Plays favourites
  • Rigid about oaths and old rules
  • Carries every loss alone

In relationships

Chiron's habit is spotting the hero before the kid does. He did it with Percy at Yancy, and he has been doing it with demigods for thousands of years. The cost is distance: he keeps secrets for your own good, and the people he loves sometimes learn the truth later than they should have.

He works best with students who argue back. Annabeth treats him as family and was crushed when the camp fired him. Percy keeps pushing him to share more than he wants to, and grows on him for it. Mr. D, his pinochle partner and grumpy fellow staff member, is the one colleague who never needs protecting.
