What is MBTI? The 16 personality types explained

Every character profile on this site uses a four-letter type. Here is how to read the letters, and where to find every type.

MBTI stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It sorts personalities into 16 types by combining four pairs of preferences. Nobody is purely one side, the letters show which way you lean. A type is a starting point for understanding yourself or a character, not a label or a diagnosis. Our profiles are fan interpretations written for fun.

The four pairs of letters

E or I

Where do you get your energy?

E: Extraverted
You get your energy from people, action and talking things through.

I: Introverted
You recharge alone and think things through inside your head first.

N or S

How do you take in information?

N: iNtuitive
You notice patterns, possibilities and the big picture before the details.

S: Sensing
You trust what you can see and touch: facts, experience, the here and now.

T or F

How do you make decisions?

T: Thinking
You decide with logic and fairness, even when it is uncomfortable.

F: Feeling
You decide with values and empathy, asking how it will affect people.

J or P

How do you like to live?

J: Judging
You like plans, closure and a settled decision.

P: Perceiving
You like to stay flexible and keep your options open.

Example: ENFP means Extraverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Perceiving. The N stands for iNtuitive because the I is already taken by Introverted.

Where does MBTI come from?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator grew out of Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. It was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers in the 1940s and sorts people into 16 types along four preferences. The official assessment is a paid, professionally administered questionnaire run by The Myers & Briggs Foundation and The Myers-Briggs Company. For a neutral overview, including the scientific criticism of the model, see Wikipedia.

The types on this site are our own, informal reading of fictional characters, made for fun. They are not official MBTI results. MBTI® is a registered trademark of the Myers & Briggs Foundation in the United States and other countries, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by it.

What about the Enneagram?

Many profiles also list an Enneagram number from 1 to 9. Where MBTI describes how you think and decide, the Enneagram describes what you are afraid of and what you are chasing. A “7” is The Enthusiast, always looking for the next good thing. An “8” is The Challenger, who takes charge and protects their people.
